Phāea Cretan Malia: A Family-Friendly Review

For all those parents craving a relaxing fly-and-flop all-inclusive holiday, but who also long for a hotel that’s reminiscent of the pre-kids days when style and beautiful design mattered just as much as high chairs and cots, we might just have found your perfect match

Set on Crete’s beautiful north coast, Phāea Cretan Malia is the kind of hotel where little ones can spend their days building sandcastles on a picture-perfect beach while their parents congratulate themselves on finding one of the chicest family hotels in Greece. This  stylish five-star resort is a member of Design Hotels, and it shows. Think swaying palm trees, lush botanical gardens and boutique vibes that wouldn’t look out of place on the pages of an interiors magazine. Spacious family rooms, thoughtful facilities for children and exceptional food with laid-back atmosphere that’s a world away from the bustle of larger all-inclusive resorts

Here, mum-of-twins Gemma (a fashion editor with a keen eye for design) – shares why Phāea Cretan Malia is the dream family hotel for anyone who refuses to compromise on style once children come along

Your most asked questions, answered

What makes Phāea Cretan Malia so good for families?

Stylish, soulful and slow-paced is how I would describe Phāea Cretan Malia

This eco-friendly, all-inclusive boutique hotel has impeccable taste from the interiors to the food. Set on a stunning beach and with beautiful gardens everywhere, you are really able to reconnect with nature at every turn. Although slowing down with toddlers is borderline impossible, the hotel’s laid-back vibe and five-star service made it so much easier to find moments of calm, even while navigating naps, meltdowns and mealtimes

What's included for families at Phāea Cretan Malia?

There’s a baby and toddler package that lets you rent essentials per day. This includes a baby bath, nappy bin, bottle warmer and more – so no need to pack everything but the kitchen sink. The main draws for families are the shallow-water beach, the child-friendly pools and the amazing, free Little Explorers Kids’ Club for ages 3-12. Younger children can be looked after by babysitters or parents can take them to the fantastic play areas

Older kids aren’t forgotten either, thanks to The Place, a dedicated teen hangout featuring outdoor cinema nights, games, hammocks and spaces where they can create their own space

What's the dining set up at Phāea Cretan Malia?

The food at Phāea Cretan Malia Park is a real highlight and feels a world away from your typical all-inclusive buffet. Families can make the most of the hotel’s dine-around concept, with several restaurants included, so there’s plenty of variety throughout your stay.

Mediterraneo serves a generous breakfast buffet with lots of child-friendly favourites, while Almyra, right by the beach, is perfect for family dinners of pizza, pasta and seafood. Mouries offers delicious traditional Cretan cuisine, and Mezze is ideal for relaxed poolside lunches and sharing plates

You’ll also find waffles, crêpes, smoothies and ice creams at The Crush, making afternoon treats easy. High chairs, children’s menus and plenty of familiar dishes mean even fussy eaters are well catered for

Also if you  book via the Travel Agency we can unlock all inclusive rates

Where is Phāea Cretan Malia ?

The flight to Crete takes just over 4 hours from the UK. Phāea Cretan Malia is positioned on the northeast coast of Crete in the town of Malia, about 30-45 minutes from Heraklion Airport. It’s a more than manageable taxi ride even when you’ve already been travelling most of the day

The resort is right on the coastline, with a stretch of beach and tropical-looking waters minutes from your hotel room. It also makes a great base for exploring the ancient Minoan ruins nearby, though I’ll be honest – we never once left the hotel! We were so happy to stay put!

When is best to visit Phāea Cretan Malia?

The season runs from May to October. We visited in early June and the temperature was absolutely perfect – around 25 degrees – warm enough to feel like a holiday, cool enough that everyone stayed in a good mood! Any hotter and I suspect the boys (and me) would have been extremely grumpy

We travelled post-half term, so the hotel was mainly couples and families with pre-school age children, which made for a lovely, unhurried atmosphere. I would imagine it would me much busier in school holidays but older kids and their parents would probably enjoy the buzz

Rooms & Suites

Phaea Cretan Malia

A bohemian bungalow with extra space

Gone are the newborn days of two cribs squeezed into the corner of our room – at this stage, a suite with a proper separate sleeping space isn’t a luxury, it’s a non-negotiable. We booked into the Deluxe Family Bungalow which, despite the name, is actually within a building of other rooms rather than a standalone bungalow (worth knowing before you book with that image in mind!)

That said, the two-bedroom layout delivered exactly what we needed. We had a king-sized bed – and when I say king-sized, there was more than enough room for any stowaways to creep in – with an adjoining room housing bunk beds, however my boys, Jude and Beau, slept in cots

The bunk beds would be such a fun sleeping arrangement for older kids and both rooms have their own bathrooms too which is perfect for teenagers wanting privacy. Add in lovely finishes, stylish touches and nice toiletries, and the five-star accommodation box was definitely ticked for me

The Deluxe Family Bungalow is just one of several family-friendly accommodation options. If you’re travelling with a baby or one young child, the entry-level family rooms offer plenty of space and all the essentials. Larger families or those travelling with grandparents can opt for interconnecting rooms or some of the resort’s larger family suites, giving everyone more room. If you’re celebrating a special occasion or simply fancy dialling up the luxury, there are also private villas with their own pools. These are perfect for families with older children who’ll spend hours splashing about while parents relax on the terrace

What we really liked was that whichever room category you choose, families haven’t been treated as an afterthought. The layouts are practical, there’s loads of storage for all the inevitable holiday paraphernalia, and little touches like cots, bottle warmers and other baby equipment are available on request

Childcare & Kid's Entertainment

Phāea Cretan Malia

A cultural adventure for curious little minds

The headline act for families with children is the kids’ club, completely free of charge for ages 3-12, with a daily itinerary packed with cooking, dancing, crafting and more, plus an outdoor play area for when they need to burn off energy. I popped my head in to take a look and it was a hive of activity and fun

At 18 months, Jude and Beau weren’t quite old enough to join in yet – but the hotel certainly hadn’t forgotten about the youngest guests. There’s a dedicated play area for babies and toddlers that parents can use together, and it was a genuinely lovely touch for those moments when the pool had lost its appeal. The boys absolutely loved exploring a fresh variety of toys and the little Wendy house in the garden – it kept them busy in the best way. There are also babysitter available to book

My boys are food obsessed so the Treehouse Picnic experience was such a cute edition to the stay. It was special to have a private moment as a family and the treehouses can also be rented for sleepovers, which would make an unforgettable memory for slightly older kids. Another example of a hotel that goes the extra mile to create really unique experiences that families can enjoy together

Wining & Dining

Phāea Cretan Malia

Organic food and scenic settings

The main buffet restaurant, Mediterraneo, serves breakfast and dinner with a brilliant selection of fresh food – Jude and Beau got to try so many things they’d never encounter at home, which I loved. Almyra, the Italian with views of the beach, has a slightly more grown-up feel, but is completely welcoming to little ones. We had a great time there and of course, all toddlers love pasta no matter where they are in the world

Mouries sits in a charming courtyard full of warmth and serves traditional Cretan cuisine, while Mezze brings levant-inspired dishes against the backdrop of the pool. And for lazy lunches by the water, The Beach Shack has a lighter menu that was perfect for sun-soaked grazing at lunch time while the little ones played in the sand

Both my boys and I are vegan, and I was genuinely impressed by what was on offer for us. We were never short of options on the adult menu (the kids’ menu slightly less so) and ate some really tasty dishes. Knowing the ingredients are locally sourced and some even grown in the resort’s own kitchen garden was something a health-conscious mum was pleased to discover too

Pools & Beach

Turquoise waters for water babies

The hotel’s main pool is centred in the middle of the resort within lush gardens and is lined with sun loungers and day beds. Having sun loungers on the grass was a nice touch, as it felt more rustic and toddler-safe and if you had a lie-in and got to the pool late, you could still pop your towels on the grass which was a good base for my sons to play with their toys. Adjacent is a small paddling pool for babies to feel comfortable in the water and we definitely made the most of that. It’s worth noting that the pools are heated – a game changer with little ones and also for anyone who prefers their pool not to be freezing in the mornings!

The beach beautiful. It has a blue flag and is very clean and calm, spread across two little bays. It was such a special setting that we headed to for sunset drinks with the boys every evening. Extra large comfy sofas meant we could lounge freely sipping cocktails whilst they played in the sand and the sunsets were unmatched. It’s worth noting that whilst it’s a sandy beach, rocks line the water so it requires extra monitoring for little feet

If you want to mix beach and pool time easily then you’ll definitely find here. Just a short walk between the two means you can keep kids entertained by visiting both over the course of a morning or afternoon, and if you need to pop back to the room it’s never far away either. Exactly what you want with very little ones

What is there for adults?

Phāea Cretan Malia

So much on offer for parents too

If your kids are young like ours, you’ll no doubt need to tag team to do anything solo. But do try to fit in some of the fab things for grown ups to do too

I loved my trip to the amazing aptly named ‘Cute’ Spa which is tucked among the banana trees. So relaxing. I also actually managed to read a book on the beach for a few hours whilst the boys napped which was the greatest luxury imaginable (all mums of toddlers will agree I’m sure!), and then swapped with my partner who went to the gym to get turn for some ‘me time’

There’s a ton of experiences you can book too such a cookery, wine tasting, olive oil tasting and plenty of local excursions that the hotel can book – some that you can take kids on too

If golf is your thing then you’ll be pleased to hear that they can book rounds at the lovely Crete Golf Club. There’s also yoga and mindfulness sessions at the hotel too

Gemma's verdict

Having spent time on the more adult-catered islands pre-motherhood, visiting Crete – a premier family destination with a number of all-inclusive resorts – was something I wanted to try. But I’ll admit that before I had my twin boys my preconceptions of an all-inclusive family resort were not good ones. Having spent the last 10 years travelling the world – mostly solo – to some genuinely brilliant luxury hotels, an all-inclusive conjured images of rowdy buffet, plastic sun loungers and sterile hotel rooms. But thankfully, as an aesthetics lover who craves a calm environment, the boutique feel of Phāea Cretan Malia was everything I’d hoped for and more. We all loved it

If you want an intimate, boutique setting, a stunning natural landscape and a calm environment that doesn’t compromise on style, Phāea Cretan Malia is your answer. You don’t have to choose between ‘nice hotel’ and ‘family friendly’ – it genuinely feels like both. It never once felt chaotic and crowded, which as a parent of two tiny tornados, I really feel the value of. It all still felt very much elevated enough for adults to decompress and not totally over run by small people. If that’s your thing (it’s definitely mine) then this is certainly a stay to bookmark

Phāea Cretan Malia: Our Tiny Travelship Take

Best for families who want…

  • Beautiful boutique design without compromising on family comfort: Phaea Creta Malia is one of the most stylish family resorts in Greece, with chic interiors, lush gardens and a laid-back atmosphere that feels effortlessly luxurious while still welcoming little ones
  • Exceptional dining without the usual all-inclusive compromises: If you book through the Tiny Travel Agency, you'll can access all-inclusive rates with access to the resort's outstanding à la carte restaurants. It's a rare chance to experience genuinely exceptional food as part of your holiday, making this a brilliant choice for families who don't want to settle for standard buffet dining
  • Pools you'll actually want to spend all day in: From the beautifully heated main pool (something we think makes a huge difference, even in the height of summer) with its enormous shallow shelf and sunken loungers, to the separate toddler splash pool and the winding lagoon pool (reserved for certain room types) with its gentle beach-style entry, the pools here are one of the resort's biggest highlights

Ask us for other suggestions if…

  • You like exploring on foot: Malia itself isn't the prettiest resort town, so this isn't the place we'd choose if you love wandering into charming villages, waterfront promenades or atmospheric local tavernas straight from the hotel
  • Your children love non-stop entertainment: Beyond the kids' club, there aren't playgrounds, splash parks, waterslides or packed daily activity programmes. If your family thrives on endless things to do from breakfast until bedtime, we'd recommend a livelier resort
  • You want lots of restaurant choice: The dining here is excellent, but there are only a handful of restaurants. If one of your favourite parts of a family holiday is choosing somewhere different every evening, we know resorts that offer much more variety
  • A postcard perfect beach is top of your wish list: The beach directly in front of the resort is quite rocky and not your stereotypically Greek vista. If your perfect family holiday involves toddlers building sandcastles or children running straight into calm, sandy water, we'd suggest one of our favourite beach resorts instead
