A utopia for outdoor enthusiasts, guests can try their hand at every kind of water sport imaginable. Staying here is all about making the most of England’s green and pleasant land, but this hotel is much more than just a nature-rich retreat. The design-led decor and considered comforts inside stand toe to toe with the sublime scenery outside (a trophy-worthy achievement in this part of the country). Tiny Travellers (6 months +) won’t want to leave the complimentary Kids’ Zone, where activities include honing their bush craft and orienteering skills. Best time to visit
In the land of Beatrix Potter and William Wordsworth rainy days are just as beautiful as the sunny ones. Visit during the summer for the warmest wild swimming weather (although remember this is Britain and there are no guarantees). The glorious gold and russet tones of Autumn are our favourite when crowds are lighter and pub fires are lit. Come Winter, wellie walks through snow capped trails are pretty magical, whilst Spring is the season that captured the hearts and minds of many poets

‘Traditional’ hotel rooms are split between the original Georgian country house and the new contemporary wing. We love the family suites for generous main bedrooms and separate bunk rooms for tiny travellers. Outside, you’ll find a 2-bedroom treehouse complete with al fresco tub and floor-to-ceiling views. The family friendly shepherd huts have stargazing roofs over double beds. Dog-friendly rooms are available

The magical tale of Peter Rabbit is brought to life at Lingholm Estate (in a more parentally palatable taste than the interactive exhibit), where the picture-perfect Walled Garden is credited as the inspiration for Mr McGregor’s. Animal adventures continue thanks to Alpacaly ever after – where children and adults alike can meet, greet and walk with furry alpaca friends. Don’t miss the kitchen cafe for homemade cakes, scones and locally sourced dishes

Hallin Fell
Perhaps the most family friendly Fell, Hallin Fell is one of the smallest hills in the park (at just 388m), yet it offers the grandest of views. Perfect for first-timers and little legs there aren’t many other hikes that match up in the scenery stakes. Tiny travellers will love catching a ride aboard the Steamer to the start of the walk

Lowther Castle and Gardens
One of England’s grandest gothic mansions, Lowther Castle is home to enchanting gardens, imposing ruins and one of the largest outdoor adventure playgrounds in the UK. The ‘Lost Castle’ will have little imaginations (and legs) running wild, with zip wires, wooden turrets, slides and wonky walkways. The ultimate kiddie kingdom
