Overview

Heated pools? Tick. Villas on site? Absolutely. Gourmet flexibility, a kids’ club straight out of a movie, and suites larger than most London flats? Las Terrazas de Abama Suites has it all. This Canary Islands sanctuary masterfully blends five-star elegance with family-friendly freedom, giving parents the space to unwind in style while kids plunge into endless adventure. A year-round treasure, it’s just as perfect for a winter-sun escape as it is for a summer getaway — with Goldilocks-approved “hot-but-not-too-hot” weather (ideal for little ones), flights often cheaper than to the Med, and prices that make luxury feel effortlessly within reach

One of the cleverest things about Abama is that it’s essentially two resorts in one. Las Terrazas sits at the bottom of the hill, while Los Jardines perches at the top, with the golf course winding through the glorious grounds. Guests can roam freely between both, using the full sweep of facilities. Across the larger Abama grounds, the resort boasts a double-digit restaurant roster and more Michelin stars than we’ve ever seen in one place. It’s quite hilly, yes—but fear not: golf buggies ferry you around like a VIP. From the moment you arrive, it’s clear the accommodation at Las Terrazas isn’t your standard hotel room experience. Each suite is more like a giant home from home, with a choice of one- to three-bedroom layouts, fully equipped kitchens, sprawling living spaces, and generous balconies overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. For those craving extra space and privacy, 2- and 3-bedroom villas with private pools, which can also be booked on the half board plan(!) are a stroke of genius

Now, let’s talk pools. Cinematic infinity pools? Check. Zero-entry options for tiny swimmers? Check. Pools warmed to a blissful 28°C so even the biggest water babies—and cold-sensitive parents—are happy? Double check. Private hot tubs and villa pools mean soaking in spectacular views in total privacy is also very much on the table. Foodies, brace yourselves. Abama Resort boasts one of Spain’s most impressive restaurant line-ups, including Melvin, where a menu created by 12-time Michelin-starred Martín Berasategui is included on the half-board plan. No need to stress over dinner timing—half board is flexible across lunch or dinner, making it easy to adapt to family rhythms. The fully equipped kitchens (and onsite gourmet deli) also mean cooking up little ones’ favourites at 9pm when hangry meltdowns strike is completely stress-free

Tiny travellers are truly spoiled with the Abama Kids Club (4+) — one of the most impressive children’s spaces we’ve seen, evoking Parent Trap-style scenes of outdoor adventure and back-to-nature fun. This is a strictly no-parents zone (no stay-and-play here), but with such an incredible line-up of activities, your little ones won’t want to check out once they’ve checked in. From gardening and science experiments to football, zip-lining, and off-site adventures like Siam Park or go-karting, every day brings a new dose of excitement. And once or twice a week (depending on the season), evening mini-parties are also on the agenda — giving parents a well-earned night off for a solo dinnertime. Add world-class golf, padel, tennis, and a superb spa to the mix, and you’ve got a resort where everyone can find their happy place — for adults, that could mean a morning on the green or a blissful spa session, while for little ones, picture-perfect pools and new friends at camp await

What family facilities are there, and how much do they cost?

The Abama Kids Camp is truly a standout among children’s clubs, offering an epic, screen-free experience set entirely in the great outdoors. Nestled within a private, gated garden, the camp features a collection of canvas tents dedicated to crafts, science, sensory play, and cooking—ensuring there’s something to appeal to every age and interest. Beyond the tents, children can bounce on the trampoline, tend a miniature vegetable patch, zoom down the zip wire, or even perform on a sand-fronted mini theatre stage. Exclusively for kids aged 4–14, it’s a strictly adult-free zone where siblings can enjoy shared space while activities are thoughtfully separated by age (4–9 and 9+) to maximize engagement. The fun doesn’t stop at the camp itself: excursions run once a week to the local Siam Park waterpark, dolphin-watching trips, go-karting adventures, and escape rooms (for an additional charge)

On select evenings (during peak), the camp hosts lively mini-parties, complete with dinner, giving parents a perfect excuse to indulge at the adults-only Akira Black Michelin-star restaurant

The Kids Camp here is charged, prices below:

Half day: 4 different activities with snack included — 24€

Full day: All the daily activities (except evening) with lunch and 2 snacks — 48€

Special evening: From 18:00h up to 22:00h, including dinner — 42€

3 days pack: All the activities of 3 full days (except evenings), with 2 snacks and 1 meal each day — 115€

5 days pack: All the activities of 5 full days (except evenings), with 2 snacks and 1 meal each day — 178€

Babysitters (18 euros per hour, with a minimum of 3 hours) can be booked if you fancy an adults only date night, but these can’t be booked to take younger children into the Kids Club

Outside of the children’s pools (which we’ll get to a minute) all of the kids facilities and playgrounds are found within the Kids Camp itself

Which equipment is available to borrow for babies & children?

The hotel provides a baby crib, highchair, and bed safety rail, and they partner with a trusted rental company offering a full range of additional baby and children’s items available for advance booking at an extra cost

    What are the pools like?

If you’re after poolside bliss with uninterrupted views, Las Terrazas de Abama is hard to beat. The resort’s three heated infinity pools offer breathtaking panoramas of the Abama golf course, the Atlantic Ocean, and La Gomera, making every swim feel like a postcard moment. One of the main pools sits alongside the Pool Bar Sunway, serving light dishes, fresh juices, and cocktails, so you can easily spend the day lounging without ever leaving the water. Families will appreciate the separate toddler splash pool, while slightly further up the resort, a zero-entry pool makes life effortless for tiny travellers who want to crawl, splash, and play safely before they can swim. At the very top of the resort, the third pool sits next to the spa, perfect for a more tranquil escape. All the pools are heated to a comfortable 28°C, and for those craving total privacy, some luxury suites come with their own hot tubs, or you can opt for a villa with a private pool—ideal for soaking in the spectacular views in complete seclusion

    Is there evening entertainment?

Abama isn’t about mini discos or loud evening entertainment—instead, parents can unwind easily thanks to the super-spacious apartments, with plenty of separate living areas. We’re big fans of the giant balconies, which you can reach without disturbing sleeping children, perfect for sunset wine sessions and soaking in the view

    What’s the protocol for allergies?

The hotel asks guests to inform them in advance of any allergies or special dietary requirements. Once this information is received, it is communicated internally to all relevant department heads to ensure they are aware and that the necessary measures are taken to provide a safe and comfortable stay

    What’s the dining set up?

Dining at Abama is a real highlight, whether you’re on a B&B or half-board plan. All of the restaurants take care to make meals family-friendly, with children’s menus and options available on request, while adults can enjoy some seriously impressive cuisine

Atlántico, located in the exclusive Abama Golf Club House, is open from breakfast through to dinner (7:30–11:00 for breakfast, 12:00–17:00 for lunch, and Thursday to Monday 19:00–22:00 for dinner), with a bar running 8:00–18:00

Tágara offers a modern take on traditional Canary Islands cuisine at Los Jardines de Abama Suites (at the top of the resort). Open for lunch and snacks 12:30–16:00, a bar from 12:00–17:00, and dinner Sunday to Thursday 18:30–21:00, Tágara brings local flavors to life with a contemporary twist

Then there’s Melvin, the resort’s standout fine-dining experience, and honestly, it’s incredible that a menu of this standard is included in the half-board plan. Open for dinner Tuesday to Saturday from 18:30–21:30, Melvin carries the signature of renowned Spanish chef Martín Berasategui (with his 12 Michelin-stars), with masterful dishes crafted under the direction of chef Sergio Fuentes. Expect an inventive menu that blends traditional Basque-style preparations of meat with the freshest fish from the Canary coasts and perfectly executed rice dishes

The half-board plan at Las Terrazas de Abama Suites is exceptional value for money, and we loved the flexibility it offers—breakfast plus a three-course dinner at selected resort restaurants, with the option to swap dinner for lunch if it better fits your day. Atlántico is fully included with no supplement, and even Melvin, the Michelin-level restaurant from Martín Berasategui, can be enjoyed without paying anything extra, making fine dining feel effortless rather than indulgent. What makes it even more convenient for families is that every apartment comes with a fully equipped kitchen, and there’s an on-site supermarket, so you can easily whip up kids’ meals whenever you need, or prepare a casual lunch or dinner exactly the way you like it

    Meet the family...

    @magaroniandcheese

Parent to Tiny Traveller aged 18 months

We travelled with two families (four adults and two 1.5-year olds), and stayed together in a two-bedroom apartment, which was absolutely brilliant; modern, comfortable and chic and there was plenty of space to spread out with all the toddler gear we had in tow. Both bedrooms had their own ensuite bathrooms (one with a large bathtub), plus a generous kitchen, living room and outdoor hot tub. The kitchen was fully equipped & we even sent a food shop order to the hotel in advance, and everything we needed was waiting for us when we arrived! The main pool was heated (and the infinity views over the golf course were to die for!), and had a separate heated toddler/baby pool. The guys loved the golf and we spent a lot of time hanging out at the pool or down at the beach, which is perfectly sheltered for tiny swimmers and beautiful. We would absolutely recommend it to families

    Worth waking the baby for

    01

    Abama Beach

A three minute drive away, served by frequent & free transfers, Abama Beach is a peaceful, paradisiacal cove where turquoise waters lap golden sands. Plus all the amenities you could wish for (we’re talking toilets & showers, and a beach restaurant)

    02

    El Teide National Park

Named after Mount Teide, a towering volcano and highest peak on Spanish soil, head to the National Park where you can jump in a cable car to the summit or head off on a mini hike, taking in otherworldly rock formations and stunning views. The sunsets are unbeatable

    03

    Whale & Dolphin Watching

A whale and dolphin watching hotspot, you’ll find plenty of boat trips around the island – or ask the Resort to help you book a tour. Depending on the time of year, you can expect to see Blue Whales, Humpback Whales or Sperm Whales, plus dolphin friends
