Why a villa stay is a great family holiday

James Villas Porec , Croatia

When it comes to planning a family escape, there’s one option that quietly ticks almost every box: the villa holiday. No matter the age of your kids (or how many of them you’re travelling with), everyone can enjoy the space, freedom and gloriously relaxed pace that comes with having your very own family-friendly home-from-home

From the ease of stocking the fridge with snacks they’ll actually eat (no daily negotiations over beige buffet food), to long, lazy days by your own pool… or that blissful hour (if you’re lucky!) when little ones nap happily in their own room while you read a book on a lounger steps away – it just works

Since 1984 James Villas have been making the dream holiday a reality for families. Whatever your dream location, style of villa or budget – be that high-end luxe or beautifully simple – there’s a property for you within their vast portfolio

Time together

One thing James Villas know families value the most is uninterrupted time together. No distractions, no schedules, no rushing anywhere – just your gang , hanging out in the sunshine and doing things entirely on your own terms. When you really break down what makes a holiday feel like a holiday – switching off from the daily grind, relaxing reconnecting as a family and discovering somewhere new. A James Villa stay has it covered – from low-key to high-end luxury

Villa Spotlight: the one that has it all

If you’re idea of a dream holiday is walking up in the morning to a picture perfect sea view (who’s isn’t?!) then this stunning villa in Starigrad Paklenica-Rovanjska, Croatia is one to consider. The amazing swimming pool with its panoramic coastal vista will keep kiddos (and parents) happy all day but that’s not the only win for families – there’s a great little play area, a garden and a lovely shady terrace. Inside you’ll find stylish open plan living and three gorgeous bedrooms that sleep eight in total and come with cots for little ones. What makes this luxury Croatian property really stand out is its amazing location. You can spend a morning on the beach, visiting the nearby Paklenica and Kornati National Parks or popping into the historic city of Zadar and still be back in time for nap time at the villa. All boxes massively ticked

How to choose the right villa

James Villas

With James Villas, finding the perfect family getaway couldn’t be simpler – browse, book, and step straight into your dream villa with ease. Their website has search options that let you tick the things that matter most to you. From cots, kid’s play areas and pools to proximity to the beach, BBQs and even the option to bring pets – they make it easy to build your holiday wish list and find a villa that matches it. Or if you want more advice simply call or email their knowledgeable, friendly team who are happy to answer any questions and do the research with you

When travelling with kids there are some important factors to consider. Top of our list? Villas with enclosed gardens, secure terraces and sensible layouts –  for example, all on one level (no stairs to worry about) – and pool safety features such as fences and covers, which we find essential for peace of mind

Location really matters

This is where you can really shape your holiday. Do you want a tucked-away, off-grid escape where you properly switch off? Or somewhere in the heart of a village where you can wander out for dinner or an ice cream? Maybe proximity to the beach is important so you can dip in and out of the sea all day?

Being close to a village or small town can make life much easier with kids – quick bakery runs and easy outings. Nearby beaches, activities like water parks or boat trips, and walkable spots all add to the experience (and help keep older kids entertained)

And then there’s that lovely feeling of living like a local. Popping into a Spanish supermarket, browsing a French pharmacy, picking up fresh bread and fruit from a market – it all becomes part of the rhythm of the trip. Or, if total switch-off mode is the goal, go remote… just don’t forget to stock up on supplies first

The beauty of James Villas is that all of these are options

Ideal for bigger groups

If you’re travelling as a bigger family or group, villas can really come into their own. Instead of splitting across multiple hotel rooms (or worse, different hotels), everyone shares one space – while still having room to breathe. Grandparents can enjoy a quiet coffee on the terrace, kids can spend hours in the pool, cousins can share rooms and form their own little holiday crew, and parents can actually sit down together in the evening. It’s relaxed, easy, and brings everyone together in a way that hotels rarely manage. And that, really, is what makes a family holiday feel special. Not to mention, splitting the cost of a big property almost always works out more affordable, giving you excellent value for money – and if you’re travelling with family members, you’ve got built-in babysitters in the form of grandparents, aunts, or uncles too

Villa Spotlight: perfect for larger groups

Maybe you are planning a trip with friends or have grandparents joining the holiday, either way meet Villa S’Estoneta – your cliff-hugging, sea-gazing Mallorca escape near Canyamel that’s large enough to fit you all in. Think big terrace energy: a sparkling pool, BBQ feasts, lazy lounge corners, and front-row views of the Mediterranean all day long. Inside, it’s all light, space, and wow-factor windows. The open living-dining area flows straight onto the terrace, with a sleek kitchen ready for everything from quick breakfasts to group dinners. Upstairs? Dreamy bedrooms, more sea views, plus a handy little workspace. Location-wise, it’s amazing too. Canyamel’s sandy beach, restaurants, and shops are five minutes away, and Cala Ratjada’s buzz is just a short drive

What can a villa offer that hotels can’t?

James Villas

Your schedule, your rules. First things first: the pace. Or rather… the lack of one. One of the greatest luxuries of a James Villas holiday is the freedom to do exactly as you please. No breakfast slots, no queuing for sun loungers (because yes, even at five-star resorts… it still happens), and absolutely no need to plan your day around anyone else’s timetable

Cereal at 10:30am? Fine. Late-night swim after dinner? Go for it. Afternoon snooze for whoever needs it? Always an option. And the holy grail when travelling with little ones: no more being ‘nap-trapped’. Pop them down in a cool bedroom and enjoy some quiet time just outside with a book or a coffee – instead of being stuck whispering in a dark hotel room for two hours. That flexibility is a total game-changer when you’ve got kids of different ages doing very different things. Babies nap, older ones swim, someone’s watching TV in the shade

Space to yourself (actual space!)

This is possibly the best bit of what a James Villas has to offer. Hotels give you a room. Villas give you space – proper, liveable, spread-out space. And if you’ve ever tried squeezing a family (plus suitcases, toys, a buggy and possibly a travel cot) into one hotel room you’ll know exactly why this matters. With a villa, everyone gets a proper bedroom. No climbing over each other, no makeshift sleeping arrangements, and no creeping around in the dark like you’re on an assault course just to use the bathroom after 8pm

And it’s not just about sleeping. It’s the living space that makes all the difference – sofas to flop onto, a kitchen for snacks on demand (and somewhere to stash bottles and a steriliser), and outdoor areas where kids can actually be kids. Early risers aren’t confined to a few square metres, and once the little ones are asleep, parents can properly relax somewhere that isn’t a tiny balcony

Food made easy

Food with kids can be… unpredictable. Between picky eaters, random hunger times and restaurant schedules that never quite line up, having your own kitchen is a lifesaver. You can stock up on all the favourites, do easy breakfasts in pyjamas, throw together simple dinners, or head out when it suits. Some nights it’s a local restaurant, other nights it’s something quick with a glass of wine on the terrace. No pressure, no fuss –  just options

Villa Spotlight: for little ones

Packed with character, this pretty Tuscan villa is ideal for little ones. First up there’s a fenced garden with plenty of grassy space to run around and play. Add to this a gorgeous pool and a fun play area complete with swings and a slide. A rustic chic gem, this detached house has wonderful rural views but is close enough to the coast for day trips.  Sleeping six in two bedrooms, this is a great for a family with with toddlers and young children

The pool: all the entertainment you need

James Villas Pool

And then for most people… the main event: your own pool. For kids, it’s pure joy. For parents, it’s hours of built-in entertainment with very little effort required. Splashing, diving, endless made-up pool games – it all happens right there, all day long, while you sit nearby enjoying the chance to actually read a book

The pool quickly becomes the heart of the holiday. Morning dips, poolside lunches, late afternoon cool-downs, and those dreamy evening swims as the sun goes down. And for children, having their own pool feels wildly exciting – like they’ve somehow checked into a film set. (And honestly, it has a similar effect on adults.)

There may not be a kids’ club or babysitting services on tap – but don’t let that put you off. What you lose in organised entertainment, you more than gain in wonderful, concentrated family time. Kids tend to make their own fun anyway – swimming, exploring, inventing games with siblings or cousins. And many of James Villas come with extras like table tennis, games rooms, football goals or big gardens – perfect for hours of old-school, screen-free fun

Want the odd adults-only dinner? Totally doable. With a bit of research, you’ll usually find local babysitters or nanny services – just make sure to check references. It’s also worth noting that James Villas do have plenty of properties that don’t have pools if that’s not your thing. Again, the most important thing here is finding what works best for your family

Villa Spotlight: for active kids

If you want the privacy and space of a villa but with some hotel style sports facilities then check out this villa in Koprivnica in Croatia. Located near Zagreb, this large modern house not only has a swimming pool with an indoor spa area, whirlpool and sauna, it’s also right next door to a multi-purpose playground with numerous facilities such as mini golf, a tennis court, a football and basketball court, golf driving ranges and a putting green – all of which guests have access to. It sleeps nine in four bedrooms and has its own bikes which you can borrow to explore the many cycling and mountain bike trails in the local area

Villas are great for all ages

Babies

Travelling with a baby = travelling with a lot of stuff. And a fairly non-negotiable routine. Villas make life so much easier. There’s space for everything – travel cots, changing gear, highchairs – and many family-friendly villas provide the basics, meaning less to pack

Toddlers

Ah, toddlers. Tiny explorers with absolutely no sense of danger. A villa is pretty much ideal. Unlike a hotel, they can’t just disappear into a crowd. As anyone who has ever chased a three-year-old around a hotel pool or beach trying to keep tabs on their endless movements will testify, a garden with walls and a lockable gate is a godsend. Being able to open the door and let them run straight outside is a genuine game-changer. Just make sure any pool is properly fenced so access is always supervised

Kids

For children in the primary school years, villa holidays often feel like pure magic. A new, exciting place to make their own. From the pool to a new bedroom setup to day trips to the beach – it’s all thrilling when you’re little. And while it may not be the aim of the holiday, it’s undoubtedly an educational experience as they navigate supermarkets, walks to restaurants and settling into new surroundings

Teenagers

Possibly the toughest audience… but villas tend to win them over. They get a bit of independence while still being part of the family trip. Their own room (or sharing with siblings/cousins), space to chill, sleep-ins, pool time, maybe exploring locally depending on age. And because villas are often in more residential or low-key locations, the whole experience feels more relaxed and less of a forced ‘family resort holiday’ – which definitely helps

James Villas Makarska-Glavina

Villa Spotlight: for teens

For serious ‘cool points’ take your teens to Ibiza. This amazing island is bursting fun actives to do with older kids and the base from which to do it all is Villa Charlotte in Sant Josep de Sa Talaia. Just a 10-minute drive from some of the island’s most stylish beach clubs this chic villa is a place teens (and their parents!) will love to call home. Sleeping 12 in four bedrooms (so there’s room for the kids to bring some friends too), it has an amazing pool 2 outdoor dining areas, a 50-inch TV, Apple TV, a Sonos sound system, 100 MB fibre optic internet, Wi-Fi and air conditioning in the bedrooms, as well as breathtaking views over the sea and stunning Es Vedrá
