While we’ll (obviously) always champion a family holiday, we’re also realistic enough to admit that when your children are very small, the pre-trip packing alone can feel like a full-scale logistical operation, and one that occasionally makes you wonder if staying home might be the more relaxing option!
Which is precisely why, from recent first-hand experience, arriving at Bruern Cottages feels like you’ve quietly beaten the system. While I love a European escape as much as the next person, there’s a particular kind of understated luxury in a staycation close to home in the UK: minimal effort, maximum reward
Perfectly positioned in the Cotswolds, an easy couple of hours from London, Bruern Cottages artfully combine the polish and attention to detail of a boutique hotel, with the freedom, privacy and sheer space of self-catering. Add in the rarity of no minimum night stay, and suddenly a weekend getaway feels like a no-brainer, although fair warning, once you’ve checked in, you’ll almost certainly be booking your return trip for longer
Read on to see why Bruern Cottages has become a firm favourite for parents who want a holiday without the usual hassle

The best way I can describe Bruern Cottages is this: imagine stepping into your own private episode of Bridgerton- if that stately home just happened to come fully equipped with playgrounds, a heated pool, ride-on cars, and the only real scandals revolved around snack negotiations and bedtime resistance. With just 12 cottages (sleeping two to ten) scattered across grounds that feel nothing short of magical, it strikes that rare balance of being both expansive and deeply intimate, the sort of place that was made for multi-generational gatherings or groups of friends who want to take over somewhere special together
And then there’s the location. While Cornwall and Devon may have cornered the market on beautifully designed, fully equipped “home-from-home” stays, elsewhere in the UK the options are surprisingly thin on the ground. Which is exactly why I fell, quite unreservedly, for Bruern Cottages, tucked into one of the most picturesque pockets of the Cotswolds. Close enough to make an-after-school dash entirely feasible (around 90 minutes from our front door and roughly two hours from London), yet deeply relaxing enough to feel like a proper escape, it delivers that elusive mix of convenience and a true switch-off. We arrived with just enough time to burn off some pre-bed time steam on the Friday night, and by the time Sunday rolled around, it felt as though we’d stretched a weekend into something far longer, all without the usual end-of-trip dread of a punishing journey home
Families will find:
A storybook-worthy two-storey Wendy house, complete with a bedroom upstairs and a fully set-up doll’s tea party zone below
A much-loved (and crucially heated) play cabin, packed with dressing-up, a doll’s house, Brio railway, books and farm toys, plus a seriously comfy sofa for laid-back supervising
A brilliant games room for older kids, featuring table football, ping-pong, a pool table, PS4 and Xbox
Plenty of outdoor space with a tennis court, football-friendly lawns, mini croquet and cricket sets, plus bikes to borrow (helmets included)
An adventure playground with swings, slide and climbing frame
A heated indoor swimming pool open year-round, perfectly positioned next to the playground for easy back-and-forth
A thoughtfully curated “Parents’ Peace of Mind Kit”: from baby monitors and bed guards to socket covers, stair gates and even plastic mealtime essentials, alongside all the usual kit (cot, linen, high chair) taken care of
Yes, yes, yes!
In summary, Bruern Cottages provides the kind of seamless, detail-driven set-up that takes quiets that ever-present background hum of parenting on the move, and allows your brain to genuinely take a break too
In practice this includes: an exceptionally generous, locally sourced welcome basket (think champagne, fresh bread, eggs, bacon, cake and more)
Thoughtfully prepared cottages with fresh towels, linen, and bathrooms stocked with shampoo, conditioner and essentials. And the thoughtfulness doesn’t stop there. Cupboards are packed with everything from a washing machine, detergent included, through to potties, toilet steps, a NutriBullet and even bowls, treats and a towel for any doggies visiting
Access to a trusted little black book of private chefs – perfect for effortless, restaurant-quality dinners at home, and yes you can bet I definitely made use of this during my trip!
Reliable, recommended babysitters, making it easy to carve out some proper grown-up downtime (with excellent local pubs a short drive away)
A well-equipped on-site gym featuring everything from a running machine and rowing machine to free weights, cross trainer and exercise bike
Spa treatments available to book, bringing a touch of indulgence to an otherwise low-key, home-from-home stay
Bruern Cottages sit just outside Chipping Norton, right on the edge of the Cotswolds, around two hours from London and an easy drive from much of the South East. Hidden away in rolling countryside, it feels wonderfully secluded, yet you’re only a few minutes from the honey-stone charm of Chipping Norton itself. There’s a farm shop 10 minutes down the road, and a few pubs within walking distance, with plenty of iconic Cotswold villages on your doorstep
If you ask us, it’s one of the best‑located countryside stays in the Cotswolds, secluded, but close enough to dip into some of the area’s best bits whenever you fancy. And when you’re ready to explore, there are plenty of family‑friendly activities nearby, including the famous Cotswold Wildlife Park and Gardens with its variety of animals and playgrounds, Fairytale Farm with sensory zones and animal encounters, and the classic Chipping Norton Lido for summer swim. You can also discover Birdland Park & Gardens near Bourton‑on‑the‑Water, feed fish at Bibury Trout Farm, enjoy historic gardens and mazes at Blenheim Palace, or make memories at Cotswold Farm Park with its rare breeds and tractor rides
Bruern Cottages works well all year round. In summer, you can make the most of countryside walks, bike rides and al fresco dinners in the sun trap gardens. Easter and Halloween bring seasonal events, from lambing experiences at Cotswolds Farm Park to Spooktacular trails at Blenheim Palace and plenty of pumpkin patches nearby. In winter, cosy pubs, festive Christmas markets, and crisp countryside strolls make the area feel even more magical

At Bruern Cottages, there are 12 unique cottages to choose from, each with its own personality and layout
Our home for the weekend was Shipton, one of the dog-friendly options, and it was perfect for our slightly chaotic crew of four adults, four children, and two dogs. From the minute you step inside, the décor alone is enough to make you want to redecorate your own home. Think comfortable country chic: whimsical wallpaper, delicious upholstery, vintage art and plates adorning the walls, and kilim rugs underfoot. It looked effortlessly gorgeous, yet managed to feel practical too, meaning I had no anxiety about the number of sticky fingers and muddy paws I had with me
The cottage comfortably handled our slightly larger-than-intended group (it’s meant to accommodate 6 and we squeezed in 8). The three bedrooms, each with its own ensuite, a spacious kitchen, living area and really beautiful private garden were all on one level, making it great for anyone with mobility issues. Most cottages at Bruern cluster around a charming courtyard backing onto the gardens, but Shipton sits a little to the side, great for anyone who wants that extra level of privacy. Practicalities are equally well thought out: a washing machine (with detergent provided) makes life with children far easier, and dog-friendly touches mean the four-legged members of the family are just as welcome as the humans

If I haven’t made it clear enough yet, Bruern Cottages is nothing short of a children’s paradise. We visited with our little crew – ages 1, 2, and two 4-year-olds – and while the sweet spot feels like under 8, older kids are well catered for in the Games Room
The heated indoor pool is an absolute dream, easily one of the most beautiful spots we’ve ever swum in. And if you’re juggling a baby and a toddler, you’ll love the walkers and baby toys right by the pool, giving parents an extra pair of hands. Not so great weather? The wendy house and heated cabin are packed with toys that put my own play room to shame, including a dressing-up box, kitchen role play, Lego books, and more
Outside, the sprawling grounds are pure adventure: a duo of playgrounds, with height-appropriate slides, swings and obstacle course for a range of ages, a mini football pitch, pedal cars, bikes and scooters, child-sized croquet, and even a tennis court just across the road

I’ll admit, with just two nights to make the most of, we spent most of our time enjoying everything Bruern Cottages has to offer and honestly, that was more than enough
On Saturday, we set off for a roughly 60-minute dog-and-pram-friendly walk (it could easily be done in 45 minutes if you weren’t tag teaming carrying toddlers, like we were, or you can borrow bikes from Bruern to cycle there) to The King’s Head Inn for lunch. It was everything you want from a modern British pub: classic dishes done really well, a cosy atmosphere, and a warm welcome for our lively group
After checking out on Sunday, we drove a short distance to Cotswold Wildlife Park, which lived up to every glowing recommendation we’d heard. Huge props to whoever decided to allow dogs here – finding staycations that accommodate our four-legged family members is no small feat. The park itself was incredible: we loved seeing red pandas, penguins, lions, bats, and the largest anaconda I’ve ever set eyes on. You can get right up close to the giraffes during feeding, enjoy rhinos from your picnic spot on the lawn, take a ride on the mini choo-choo train, or while away hours in the playground, which really feels like a destination in its own right. (Pro tip: bring a packed lunch if you can – the lunchtime queues were wild in their own way)
If you have a bit more time, there’s so much else to explore nearby: Daylesford Farm for farm to fork dining, cookery classes and shopping, the modern British inn The Wild Rabbit, or the delightfully unexpected Burford Garden Centre, which has plants, children’s clothing, homewares and even a mini cinema. For days out, families can meet the friendly alpacas at Cotswold Alpacas, let the kids run wild at Blenheim Palace’s adventure playground, or explore local attractions like Cogges Hall Farm Museum, Birdland Park, Cotswold Motor Museum, The Model Village, and The Dragonfly Maze. There are also charming shopping towns nearby, including Tetbury and Stow on the Wold, while local pubs and restaurants such as The Chequers, The Bell in Charlbury, The Swan Inn in Swinbrook, and The Double Red Duke comes highly recommended
I never knew just how much mental bandwidth school could consume until my eldest started reception this September; and suddenly, the stretch from February half term to Easter felt like a marathon, and I was desperate for a weekend to recharge my *very* drained parent batteries. While I’m a big fan of the serviced holiday homes in Cornwall and Devon, squeezing those into a quick 48 hrs is impossible, which is why the Cotswolds location of Bruern Cottages suddenly felt like a shining beacon. Escaping my usual day-to-day for a few nights, with minimal effort required, felt like an indulgent luxury: a setting that effortlessly slows your pace, restores your energy, and still lets you be back in time to unpack your suitcases on Sunday night. Bruern Cottages exceeded my every expectation – beautiful beyond imagination, intimate yet spacious, and soul-restoring in the quietest, most elegant way. Our cottage struck the perfect balance of quaint, cosy, and convenient, with everything we could possibly need for travelling with kids within easy reach. The little ones were besotted by the heated indoor pool, playgrounds, play cabin, and wendy house, while as adults, we could finally breathe, knowing that so much had already been taken care of. We visited as a group of friends in a single cottage, but Bruern’s scale and layout would also make it ideal for multiple families or multi-generational getaways, and it’s just as thoughtful for paw-rents as it is for little ones, with dogs made to feel just as welcome as the kids
