If you’ve ever dreamed of a hotel that somehow manages to make both parents and kids happy, consider your prayers answered: Calcot & Spa is basically the holy grail of family-friendly UK getaways. A honey-hued home-from-home in the Cotswolds, it somehow balances grown-up luxury with clever, family-first touches that make life with tiny humans feel… almost indulgent. Here’s the lowdown from two of the Tiny Travelship team

Taking our in-depth family reviews one step further, not just one, but two members of Tiny Travelship have been lucky enough to experience this wellness wonderland that is Calcot firsthand. Between us, we had a baby girl and three very high-energy boys, ranging from toddlers to reception-year explorers, aka the full-spectrum of “will this hotel survive us?” levels
Ally visited during February, while Frankie enjoyed the height of August sunshine, giving us a full picture of what Calcot offers across the seasons. Here is our honest, first-hand look at everything families actually care about – the pools, the spa, the clever room layouts – and how it all comes together to make life with little ones feel just that bit easier (and a lot more luxurious). Spoiler: we would go back in a heartbeat!
Calcot & Spa is the kind of place that makes you do a double-take: a spa hotel and an exciting enclave for sprogs. Cosseting wellness and family life in equal measure, it manages what most hotels can’t – letting parents switch off without feeling guilty while kids are endlessly entertained. The legendary Playbarn offers four hours of free, OFSTED-registered childcare daily, with no age restrictions. Meanwhile, adults can sneak off to the state-of-the-art Grain Store gym, indulge in a treatment, or soak in the fireside hot tub – bliss, guaranteed. The heated outdoor pool dazzles in summer, but winter sees the spa and indoor facilities come into their own. Thoughtful touches abound: baby monitors at check-in, adjoining rooms, dedicated children’s tea, and outside school holidays, kids stay, play, and eat for free on midweek breaks. In short, Calcot & Spa delivers all-season family magic – effortlessly chic for adults, endlessly fun for children – and it’s exactly the kind of staycation that leaves everyone recharged, refreshed, and quietly smug that they found it first
Calcot & Spa is a sprawling, spoiling playground for tiny travellers – and by that we mean everything here is set up so that being on holiday with kids feels genuinely easy
Families will have access to:
The Playbarn and The Mez: A purpose‑built, Ofsted‑registered crèche where up to four hours of daily childcare is included with your stay – and yes, it welcomes children from newborn upwards. Older kids even have their own chill‑out zone with games consoles
Indoor and Outdoor Fun: The indoor pool has dedicated family swim slots, and in summer the heated outdoor pool is open daily. Outdoors, the 220‑acre estate is practically dotted with woodland adventure areas, lawn games, pedal bikes (with child seats and trailers available), disc golf, croquet and tennis courts to explore
Extra Family Perks: Everyday life is easier here thanks to thoughtful touches like baby monitors available at check‑in, in-room-listening-services, dedicated children’s tea times, adjoining family rooms all the baby gear you could possibly need provided
When it comes to eating at Calcot & Spa, you’re genuinely spoiled for choice – and it’s all designed to feel relaxed and family‑friendly without compromising on quality. Every stay includes a full Cotswold breakfast – think hot and continental options served in The Brasserie or, handily (!) delivered to your room
There are two main dining hubs on site. The Brasserie is the resort’s flagship restaurant, open for lunch (12–2pm), afternoon tea (3–4.45pm) and dinner (6.30–8.45pm), with seasonal, locally sourced menus that feel elevated yet unfussy – perfect for everyone from toddlers to grandparents. Meanwhile, The Hive operates as a more casual all‑day spot, serving brunch from 9am, grazing plates, lighter bites and cocktails through to the evening, and hosting cosy afternoon tea and drinks around the fire
For families, one of the loveliest touches at Calcot & Spa is the complimentary children’s afternoon tea. Little guests can tuck into kid‑friendly favorites and sweet treats, all served with fruit juice or milk, and with every bit of tiny-diner kit you could need – highchairs, non-breakable plates and cups, and all the essentials to make mealtimes stress-free. Parents have full flexibility: you can enjoy an adults-only dinner while the little ones are happily occupied with the listening service, baby monitor, or babysitting, or satisfy any tiny-traveller hunger with an earlier seating before bringing them along to a second dinner with you. It’s a setup that genuinely makes family dining feel effortless – and, dare we say, enjoyable
Nestled in the heart of one of England’s most charming rural regions, the Cotswolds has rightly earned its reputation as a family‑friendly destination that keeps everyone happy. Although, we’re not going to lie, it’s very easy to check into Calcot & Spa and never want to check out, there is plenty to do beyond the hotels doors – making a strong case for a week long staycation. We’re talking – Westonbirt Arboretum’s 600 acres of tree trails, playful Gruffalo paths and woodland walks invite kids to run free and explore nature up close, while places like Cotswold Wildlife Park and Birdland Park & Gardens bring giraffes, flamingos, penguins and more to life. For hands‑on fun, Cotswold Farm Park lets children feed lambs, meet goats and ride on tractors, and classic family attractions such as the Cotswold Motoring Museum & Toy Collection or Bourton‑on‑the‑Water’s quirky Model Village blend history, play and curiosity
Calcot & Spa is the sort of place you’d happily visit every single month if time and calendars allowed. In summer, there’s simply so much to do: you can take a dip in the heated outdoor pool or explore the estate on the resort’s complimentary bikes. Warm weather definitely adds to the magic, but Calcot isn’t a one‑season wonder. Visit in autumn or winter, and the fireside hot tub, freestanding baths and cosy nooks become even more irresistible
Here’s a rough UK month‑by‑month temperature guide (average highs in °C) — helpful for planning the best time to visit:

February: 7°C
March: 10°C
April: 13°C

June: 19°C
July: 21°C
August: 21°C

Ally says: I was genuinely blown away by just how many family-friendly room options Calcot & Spa offers. Too often “family-friendly” means a sofa bed crammed into a corner, but here that is definitely not the case. We stayed in a Generous Family Room, and it absolutely lived up to its name. My little boys, Theo and Reuben, had their own proper bedroom, while we had a separate adult space with a small living area – a total game-changer once the kids were asleep. No tiptoeing, no whispering from the bathroom doorway, just blissful adult downtime. The room was spacious without feeling sterile, striking that perfect balance between airy country-house charm and cosy family comfort
Frankie says: Waking up to rolling Cotswolds greenery was pure dream material, and with our door leading straight outside to the playground, it couldn’t have been easier to let the kids burn off some energy. And when it comes to practicalities, the hotel goes above and beyond. These rooms aren’t just big – they’re fully kitted out for families, with in-room listening devices and baby monitors available on request, Bramley ‘Little B’ products, stair gates, bottle warmers, sterilisers, changing mats, nappy bins, Tonies story boxes, and smart TVs with Sky Entertainment

Ally says: I don’t say this lightly, but Calcot’s childcare offering is truly exceptional. Every child, from newborn (!), is entitled to four hours of complimentary crèche per day at The Playbarn, and that’s not just a token gesture. Split into two floors, the first floor is for 0-8 year olds and is brimming with fancy dress, painting, role play, a dedicated baby corner and sooo many toys. It honestly looks and operates like a fully equipped nursery. ‘The Mez’ is on the mezzanine upstairs, and is designed for those 8+ with gaming and chill-out zones. Here tweens, with parental permission, can sign themselves in and out. Theo and Reuben were in heaven – the Paw Patrol toys were an instant hit, but there was endless variety to keep them busy, active, and stimulated. Knowing they were in such capable hands meant we could actually switch off ourselves. Although room check in is technically from 3pm, you can book the Playbarn from 1.30pm the day you arrive, and again the morning you leave – a tiny touch we really appreciated
Frankie says: While Ally’s boys are fans of Kids Club, my son definitely self-identifies as a velcro-baby. While in the end he was actually really happy with the supervised sessions, what makes Calcot really stand out to me (and would be a godsend to other parents who struggle with drop offs at the best of time), is the ample activities available to do together. There’s a teepee full of toys, outdoor playground, mud kitchen, sandpit and ride on cars

Ally says: As a self-confessed foodie, my expectations are high, and Calcot delivered. Breakfast sets the tone. A generous buffet offers everything from fresh fruit and pastries to cereals that delighted the boys, while the à la carte menu adds polish. My husband’s veggie breakfast was delicious, and my smoked salmon and scrambled eggs were exactly what I craved! Dinner was also delicious and really impressed us. We both had steak and they were cooked perfectly! The sides were also so tasty, especially the cauliflower cheese!
Frankie says: Children’s tea at The Hive is complimentary and served daily, with both a buffet of fruit and veg crudities and fan favourites pizza, fish & chips, sausanges & beans, giving little ones a proper dining experience while parents sneak in a well-earned glass of wine. By the time bedtime rolled around, we were able to enjoy a relaxed, grown-up dinner ourselves – something that usually feels like a logistical nightmare with little ones in tow. Calcot has thought of literally everything to make it effortless. Thanks to the hotel’s in-room monitor system and our room being conveniently close to the restaurant, we could dine child-free while still keeping an eye (and ear) on the kids. For a few blissful hours, it genuinely felt like a date night rather than a family holiday – a rare, small luxury that makes all the difference

Ally says: Pools are a proper highlight at Calcot & Spa, and with both indoor and outdoor options, you’re covered for whatever the British weather decides to throw at you. For my kids, swimming really makes a holiday, so it’s a joy to find a hotel that delivers
The heated indoor spa pool has dedicated family swim times, meaning little ones can splash, dive, and go a bit wild without any pressure or awkward glances from guests without kids. Just off to the side, there’s a shallow, warm children’s pool perfect for toddlers, plus all kinds of floats and noodles to borrow
Frankie says: Ally visited in February, so the outdoor pool wasn’t open (you’ll need to visit May – October for this), but I stayed in August so managed to get the full experience. Our room was literally steps from the pool, and when the sun was shining it felt a little like we were in the South of France
Ally says: If you saw a description of a hotel with this level of childcare on paper, it would be easy to believe it would feel entirely child-focused, but Calcot & Spa manages the rare balancing act of catering brilliantly to both adults and children. At times, it genuinely felt like we could have been there on a couple’s only weekend. The spa is a real highlight. There’s something undeniably indulgent about sipping champagne in the outdoor jacuzzi without feeling rushed. Inside, calm relaxation rooms, softly lit lounges, and luxurious treatment suites await
Frankie says: The gym deserves a special mention too. This isn’t a token hotel fitness room hidden down a corridor; it’s a fully equipped, modern space that would delight even the most devoted gym-goers. I’m not usually a gym person myself, but I was genuinely impressed – everything from cardio to weights is covered, and the light, airy space makes working out feel less like a chore and more like a treat. Beyond that, adults are spoiled with plenty of subtle luxuries and thoughtful extras: an elegant library space for a quiet coffee, a cosy bar for pre-dinner drinks, and the option to enjoy long, lazy lunches while the kids are cared for. At Calcot, it’s clear that parents come first – and that rare combination of practical childcare plus genuine adult indulgence is what sets it apart
Ally says: I would wholeheartedly recommend Calcot & Spa to families looking for a holiday that genuinely keeps everyone happy. What stands out most is how seamlessly everything works together. The childcare, the dining rhythm, the family swim times, the thoughtful room layouts, It feels so easy. And when travelling with children, that ease is invaluable. From the small in-room touches that make children feel welcome, to the beautiful grounds for countryside walks, to the spa that allows parents to properly unwind, every detail feels so well thought of! The staff, too, were consistently warm and friendly, the kind of team who understand both children and parents. Calcot manages to be wholeheartedly family-first while still feeling like a refined country retreat. Safe to say, we’re already planning our return
Frankie says: While it may come as a surprise, considering my title as Tiny Travelship co-founder, I’d never actually left my children in a Kids Club. Enter Calcot, with their epic Play Barn and for the first time IN MY LIFE I managed to dispatch my two sprogs. A special mention has to go to the food at Calcot – as it was sensational. Breakfast is included in the price of your stay, and children are treated to a High Tea at 5pm. We fed the kids and then brought them along with us to our dinner time – where the restaurant had a really welcoming vibe with a mix of adult-only diners and multi-gen families. If it’s still on the menu DO NOT sleep on the white chocolate & maple eclair…it’s life changing. We stayed in one of the generous family suite cottages. Our pooch was also with us, so we were in the dog friendly one. In previous experience ‘dog friendly’ rooms leave a lot to be desired, with hotels offering different decor for pawrents. This wasn’t the case at Calcot – our room was just as beautiful as the rest, and came complete with 2 bedrooms, a HUGE bathroom (with bath) and inbuilt listening service. Personally, Calcot is the staycation I recommend the most to family and friends – it’s pretty unbeatable in my eyes
