There’s no doubt about it, families are spoilt for choice when looking for a holiday on the Spanish coast. There are, however, some hotels that really stand out as child-friendly, but also mega parent-pleasing. The La Zambra Resort near Málaga is definitely one of those. With amazing facilities, an excellent kids’s club (for six months old!) and plenty to keep grown-ups entertained too (spa, gold or padel anyone?), it strikes a beautiful middle ground: stylish but relaxed, polished yet playful and thoughtfully designed for families who don’t want to compromise on atmosphere. Here’s all the reasons this excellent spot in Andalusia should be climbing to the top of your list of places to book

Tucked into the Andalusian hills above Mijas, somewhere between Málaga and Marbella, La Zambra is a five-star escape with a quietly glamorous past and a newly sharpened focus on families. Once the legendary Byblos hotel, playground of rockstars, royals and 90s glitterati, it has been recently renovated and is now part of The Unbound Collection by Hyatt. The result? A property that blends contemporary luxury with relaxed, family-first touches that make travelling with little ones feel like an actual holiday rather than a logistical operation. All 197 rooms have private terraces, offering panoramic views of the the surrounding countryside or the glistening sea
La Zambra sits just 30 minutes from Málaga Airport, an effortless drive along the coast before you ascend into the undulating foothills of Mijas, making it ideal for tired children (and parents) after an early flight. The setting feels private and peaceful, surrounded by rolling hills and golf greens, yet you’re still within easy reach of several beaches and seaside towns
The highlights of the La Zambra for tiny travellers?
This charge for the kids’ club is €30 for a half-day, €50 for a full day and €15 for any extra hours
Additional family activities include tennis, padel lessons, horse-riding nearby, yoga, e-bike tours and boat trips along the coast. Finally, babysitting is available in the evenings at an additional charge and easy to arrange through reception
It’s not all about fun for the kids. There’s tons of great stuff for grown-ups to enjoy too
With four amazing restaurants that are all family-friendly you’ll be spoilt for choice

The rooms at La Zambra are made for families – spacious, beautifully designed and full of clever touches that make travelling with children easy. We stayed in a Family Junior Suite which offered a separate living area where a pull-out sofa could have been used for older children. Cots are available on request (and set up with proper bedding, not the flimsy travel-cot mattress you often get), and the team can provide a long list of helpful baby items. There are also large interconnecting rooms that would be ideal for bigger families with older kids
The décor is elegant and calming with light woods, soft linen textures, earthy shades and Andalusian tiles in the bathroom. It feels chic without being fragile – nothing you’d worry about kids bumping into. Our bathroom had both a large rainfall shower and a separate deep bathtub, perfect for evening wind-downs with little ones
Every room includes a fridge (ideal for baby milk), a kettle, great toiletries, blackout curtains, and plenty of storage. Some ground-floor rooms open onto private patios and lawns, great for toddlers who want to roam safely.

La Zambra’s brand-new Olé Kids Club is the real headline for families. Newly opened for summer 2025, the club has two dedicated spaces – a Baby Club (six months – three years) and Kids Club (four – 10 years). The latter has both indoor and outdoor areas, with crafting corners, sports sessions, treasure hunts and themed activities each day
My two year-old, Darcey, came out glowing with pride after painting her own Andalusian guitar. Staff are highly-trained, multilingual and genuinely warm. The icing on the cake? At the time when I visited families received two hours of complimentary childcare per day, however the kids’ club is no longer free. It now costs €30 for a half day, €50 for a full day and €15 for any extra hours
The pool setup is ideal for families. There’s a shallow children’s pool shaded for most of the day, a beautiful main pool and an adults-only pool for quiet time. Additional family activities include tennis, padel lessons, horse-riding nearby, yoga, e-bike tours and boat trips along the coast. Babysitting is available in the evenings at an additional charge and easy to arrange through reception
Budding golfers can join the seasonal PG Golf & Sports Academy, where kids and teens can hone their skills on the excellent local courses
La Zambra is a brilliant choice for all ages but works particularly well for families who want a mix of relaxation and activity. With the new Olé Kids Club welcoming babies from six months, it’s now one of the rare five-star properties in southern Spain that’s truly suitable for young families. But it’s equally appealing for parents travelling with older children, as well as multigenerational groups who want to divide and conquer the day with spa time for grandparents, golf for sporty teens and splashy pool afternoons for toddlers

La Zambra has several dining options, each relaxed yet refined, and all wonderfully welcoming to families. Palmito, the main restaurant, serves Mediterranean dishes with plenty of fresh salads, grilled fish, homemade pastas and colourful children’s options. Ours devoured the mini fish goujons and fresh fruit platters. There are highchairs everywhere, and staff never once made us feel rushed. At breakfast, expect pastries still warm from the oven, Andalusian cheeses and chefs flipping omelettes while children happily tuck into pancakes.
La Bartola, beside the pool, offers excellent tapas; the patatas bravas and prawn skewers were standouts, and the team happily adapted dishes to suit Darcey’s tastes. One of our favourite evenings was their BBQ night – grilled seafood, salads, live music and a relaxed beach-club vibe under the stars. In addition, room service is prompt and high quality – ideal when kids are too tired for a restaurant meal. The resort can also cater for dairy-free, gluten-free and vegetarian diets without any fuss.
Where to begin? The Mood Spa is exceptional, probably one of the best we’ve experienced in southern Spain. It has a thermal circuit, hammam, sauna, indoor pool and a treatment list that feels both luxurious and holistic. My massage was tailored to the fact I’d been carrying a toddler all week; my partner loved the sports therapy options
This place is packed with activities. Golf lovers will be in heaven with several courses on the doorstep. There’s also a gym, padel courts, tennis courts, e-bikes for exploring, and scenic trails for morning walks. Service around the adult pool is spot-on – in other words, cocktails, smoothies and staff who magically appear with ice water before you even realise you’re thirsty
There’s a lovely boutique too, selling resort wear, beach accessories, children’s clothing, and local ceramics that are perfect for gifts or last-minute essentials
La Zambra makes a great base for exploring. We visited Mijas Pueblo, with its pretty squares and panoramic viewpoints, and spent a day on the beaches of La Cala. Families can also head to Aqualand Torremolinos, Bioparc Fuengirola, or take a short drive to Málaga for culture, markets, and the port area. If you prefer to stay put, the resort has more than enough to fill your days, but it’s comforting to know so much is close by. We loved being able to nip down to La Cala de Mijas for an ice cream and a paddle, then retreat back to the calm of the hotel by late afternoon
Those looking for nightlife or a buzzy, high-energy resort might find La Zambra a touch too peaceful. But if your family values space, calm, warm service and well-thought-out luxury, it’s absolutely perfect. It suits active families, spa-enthusiasts and those who want to explore the region as much as those who prefer not to leave the resort at all
We chose La Zambra because we wanted somewhere that offered proper downtime for us, but also enough activities and comforts that our two-year old daughter Darcey would be as happy as we were. With 197 rooms, four restaurants, an expansive spa, and just-opened this summer, the brand-new Olé Kids Club & Baby Club, it delivered on every count
From the moment we arrived, the team made everything feel effortless: welcome treats for Darcey (stickers, colouring pencils and a teddy), a spacious family-friendly room, and staff who went out of their way to remember names and preferences. The resort manages an impressive balance – it’s a place where you can savour long, late Mediterranean lunches, drift between shimmering pools, and indulge in the largest spa in southern Spain while your children are not just accommodated but genuinely celebrated. We’d return in a heartbeat!
