It all starts as soon as you’ve bundled onto the plane and split up into two rows, the toddler screaming because they don’t want to sit next to a stranger. The taxis are never big enough and packing everyone into a standard room sucks away any hope of a calm and unfrazzled holiday (you can forget any romance too). Alymra, Cyprus

If you thought the days of chic and sophisticated design hotels were off the cards, think again. Almyra in Cyprus does that wonderful thing of being completely and utterly embracing of families, all without compromising on style. It’s undeniably chic and for families of 5, there are a range of interconnecting options including our favourite, the Junior Suite connecting with Veranda sea view room that sleeps up to two adults and four children, with two bedrooms and space for an additional bed. Yep, if separate spaces for grown-ups and little ones is what you’re after, this is your ticket. We also need to talk about the views, because this room comes washed down with a scene-stealing balcony overlooking that twinkling Med, ideal for lazing back, ice-cold rosé to hand while little people are daytime snoozing (or even better, at the awesome kids’ club that welcomes babes 4 months +)

Domes of Elounda, Crete

You’ll all go mad for Domes of Elounda, the sprawling easy-on-the-eye Cretan retreat that has been luring families with its village feel, ice-cream soft beaches and mammoth array of activities to keep the kids’ happy (there’s a chargeable creche from 4 months, complimentary Kids Club from 4 years plus heaps on offer for the teens). But let’s talk about the rooms – mostly scattered behind winding paths shaded with blousy bougainvillea and star white jasmine, guests can choose from either suite or villa, and we’ll be honest, there’s no bad room here. For families of 5 it’s worth nabbing one of the Luxury 2 Bedroom Family Suites that has two separate bedrooms with king beds alongside one sofa bed that turns into a single bed in the sitting room. There’s a sweeping terrace with spectacular views over glittering seas to Spinalonga island and you’ll have your very own jacuzzi where a nightcap post kids’ bedtime definitely beckons

Ikos Andalusia, Spain

You’ve long heard the whispers, the ‘once bitten you can’t keep away’ magic of Ikos resorts, that seems to dominate the luxury family holiday market more than any other hotel group. Ikos Andalusia is the brand’s first hotel outside Greece and is regularly hailed as the smartest, with white-washed walls and rattan and straw-everything giving this place an innate sense of Ibizan perfection bringing a crowd who’d previously written off all-inclusives (absolutely nothing to do with the all-you-can-drink Tattinger included). When it comes to hotel rooms for families of 5, the Deluxe Two Bedroom Suite with a private pool and sea view is one of the swankiest options in a blow-the-budget kind of way, with oodles of space for waft and play, not that you’ve got a hope in chance of getting them out of that pool. Take in those panoramics from your sunlounger, toes practically tickling the Med in the distance, and revel in the fact that since you’ve booked one of the top dog Deluxe Collection suites, you get a heap of added benefits too (butler service, two comp massages per room, your own private section on the beach and more)

Village Heights Resort, Crete

When you’re longing for somewhere that scoops you up and sets you down, a place that offers all the cosy creature comforts of a hotel but that sings to a tune of its own, with no fast or set rules (because who really wants to book a week’s worth of restaurant reservations as soon as you’ve checked in), let us steer you in the direction of Village Heights Resort. The antithesis of the big bananas hotels that dominate Crete’s coastline and nestled amongst lush landscaped gardens high in the Cretan mountains, guests are encouraged to switch off and wallow in time together. Yes, there’s a brilliant kids’ club, yoga sessions, spa treatments and six epic on-site restaurants, plus a free shuttle to the local beach but it’s the wallet-friendly rooms that big families adore. The serene Two-Bedroom Family Suites with Kitchenettes are simple and unfussy and sleep up to six with a sofa bed that splits into two single beds. You also have all the self-catering gear should you want to whip up something at home, with terraces that open on glorious sea or mountain scenes. You’ll be smitten

Villa Pia, Italy 

This is a backdrop that will make your heart sing, an artist’s dream of rolling hills and cypress trees, set amidst ancient olive groves and vineyards, the 15th-century Villa Pia, on the border of Tuscany and Umbria, is all about free-range holidays for you and your brood. Offering an authentic taste of Italy, where children are encouraged to roam freely among the estate’s five acres, gallivanting between the swimming pools and cooking and art classes, to the sand pit, soft play and trampoline (warning: you might not actually see the nippers all day). Family-style Italian feasting is a huge highlight, served by white-bonneted Italian mammas on long communal tables and everything is included in the price plus they’ll provide the entire kit from purees on tap to babysitters. Family rooms are no-frills and simply-furnished (we’re calling it ‘Convent Chic’) but sleep two adults and up to three children with a double bed, two singles, and a cot in each room or there’s the option of interconnecting rooms in the main house

Cullinan Belek, Turkey 

With 544 rooms, its own sandy stretch of beach, a water park, bowling alley and sprawling 36-hole golf course, Cullinan Belek isn’t short of things to do. Yes, it’s a big and fun all-inclusive hotel in Turkey with staff fetching you G&Ts on roller skates around the pool (of which there are 13 to choose from) but also retains a sense of charm and style, with linen-draped beach cabanas and chic hidey holes to slink off to when you need a bit of peace. While it attracts a predominately Russian crowd, more Brits are finding out about this place and for families of 5, there’s a great setup of rooms. Go for the Lagoon Golf Family Swim-up, overlooking the strapping green lawn of the golf course, this suite consists of two Lagoon Golf Swim-up rooms with two seating areas, two bathrooms, one bedroom with a king-size bed, the other with two twin beds and sofa beds in each room. The kids’ will go mad for the shared pool, rolling from their beds onto an inflatable swan within seconds

Valle Dell’ Erica, Sardinia 

Set on a jaw-dropping stretch of private coastline, Valle Dell’ Erica offers a rare gem, an all-inclusive that never feels too crowded. Part of Delphina, a group owned by a Sardinian family, this place will welcome you and your gang like long lost family. Here, even the teeniest of tots have a Baby Club that’s staffed until 11pm (romantic meals are actually on the cards) while older kids have an action-packed schedule – from the Robinson Crusoe day, which involves canoeing to a remote stretch of coast, learning to photograph the landscape, and then camping overnight, to golf lessons and five-a-side matches. There’s an outdoor spa with thermal pools in the garden, and seven restaurants, offering everything from shore-side fine-dining to easy local grub. When it comes to rooms, families of five with a baby under two love the Erica Family Suites with smouldering sea views, made up of two sea view rooms each with a double (or twin) with the option of adding an additional cot in each. You’ll realise that nothing, and we mean nothing, fazes the staff who do everything they can to make you feel at home
