Direct flights from London take around 11 and a half to 12 hours. It’s definitely a long journey, but a straightforward one
The sweet spot for Thailand is between November and March, when the weather is dry, sunny and not too humid – perfect for beach days and sightseeing. Average temperatures at this time hover around 25–32°C. This is peak season, so prices are higher, but the payoff is near-perfect conditions. Outside these months, Thailand is still a great option. Spring and early summer (March–May) can be hotter, often 32–38°C, but the crowds are smaller and the pace more relaxed. The green season (July–October) brings lush jungles, dramatic skies, and refreshing short rain showers that rarely last the whole day, with temperatures averaging 24–33°C. Families who are flexible are often rewarded with better value and fewer crowds
Thailand is seven hours ahead of the UK, or six hours during British Summer Time. It sounds daunting, but most families find they adapt quickly – especially when early morning rises come with sunshine and the promise of breakfast by the pool
For most families, preparing medically for a trip to Thailand is far simpler than expected. Children should be up to date with their routine UK vaccinations, including MMR, diphtheria, tetanus, polio and whooping cough, which means many families are already well covered
In addition, Hepatitis A is usually recommended for all travellers, including children. It’s spread through contaminated food and water, and while hygiene standards are high in many tourist areas, the vaccine is considered a sensible precaution and is often available free on the NHS
Depending on your itinerary and length of stay, your GP or travel clinic may also discuss Typhoid, particularly if you’re travelling beyond major tourist areas or staying for longer periods. Other vaccines, such as Hepatitis B, Japanese Encephalitis or Rabies, are not routinely needed for most family holidays. Malaria risk in Thailand is very low, so tablets are rarely advised, with doctors instead focusing on mosquito bite prevention
Ideally, vaccinations should be arranged six to eight weeks before travel
Thai culture is built on politeness, respect and a laid-back approach to life, and families who mirror that are welcomed warmly. Covering up at temples, removing shoes indoors and keeping voices calm are easy habits to adopt, and they often become part of the learning experience for children

Thailand has a magical way of making family travel feel effortless, even when you’re halfway across the globe. It’s adventurous without being overwhelming, exotic without being exhausting. Safe, reliable, and welcoming. Add to that the warm-hearted Thai culture – smiles, waves, and friendly chats with kids everywhere – and it’s clear families aren’t just tolerated here; they’re celebrated. For many parents, Thailand is the trip where long-haul travel finally clicks
Whether you’re travelling with a snoozing baby, energetic primary-schoolers, or thrill-seeking teens, Thailand adapts. Few destinations blend ease, excitement, and great value quite like this. From stunning beaches with calm, shallow waters perfect for little ones to adrenaline-filled adventures like jungle treks and ziplining for older kids, Thailand offers something for every age and interest – and all budget. It’s renowned for being a tropical paradise that won’t break the bank
It’s no wonder so many families come back again and again, discovering that Thailand grows with them as their children do. Beyond the activities, the country’s excellent family-friendly infrastructure – from resorts with kids’ clubs to family-friendly restaurants and easy transport – makes travelling with children stress-free and enjoyable
It’s easy to see why over a million British visitors flock to Thailand each year. The mix of adventure, comfort, and fun makes it one of the best places to escape to – especially during those bleak, chilly British winters. Whether it’s your first family holiday or you’re seasoned travellers, Thailand’s should be at the top of your list for a family holiday
For city sights
Thailand makes it wonderfully easy for families to blend city buzz with beach time. Bangkok is often the natural starting point and, while it’s lively, it’s also full of moments that children find endlessly entertaining – travelling by river boat along the Chao Phraya, spotting golden spires at the Grand Palace, or cooling off in a hotel pool high above the traffic. Neighbourhoods such as Sukhumvit and the Riverside are particularly well suited to families, offering easy transport links and spacious hotels
For beautiful beaches
This place is made for island hopping with kids. Phuket remains a firm favourite for first-time family trips with it’s picture perfect beaches. Areas like Kata, Karon and Bang Tao offer wide beaches with calm water, excellent resorts and plenty of space to relax, while still being close to attractions and day trips
From Phuket, it’s super simple to hop across to Krabi – which appeals to families looking for something a little quieter and more scenic. Ao Nang and Klong Muang provide easy beach access, gentle boat trips to nearby islands and dramatic limestone cliffs that give even simple beach days a sense of adventure
Koh Samui is another family favourite, especially for those seeking a softer pace and a touch of luxury. Beaches such as Bophut and Choeng Mon are known for their shallow water and family-focused resorts. You can jump on a domestic flight to Koh Samui from either Phuket or Bangkok – they’re really reaosnably priced as well as super speedy

For National Parks, mountains & jungle scenery
In contrast, Chiang Mai in northern Thailand offers a cultural and countryside escape, with its old city walls, nearby mountains and access to fascinating, ethical elephant sanctuaries that place animal welfare at the heart of the experience. Here all ages can learn more about the local wildlife and the less developed, jungle area of the country. If you want to eek out your trip a little longer, pair Chiang Mai with a Chiang Rai pitstop
