Summer always feels like the school holiday to prioritise – the longest stretch, the one we all plan our year around, and the one that feels like it should carry the biggest holiday budget. But in reality, it’s not always the one that delivers the most value. Because British summer, while not exactly tropical, does occasionally pull it out of the bag
October half-term is where everything shifts. By then, you’ve powered through weeks of school runs, packed lunches and tracked down mysteriously vanishing PE kits. Meanwhile the UK weather has fully committed to its grey, damp, “is it even daytime?” phase. This is the point in the school year where a proper break stops being a nice-to-have and becomes and extremely beneficial pick-me-up for all concerned. Which is exactly why we’d argue that October half-term family holidays are the most important bookings of the year for school parents. It’s the one moment in the calendar where a bit of sunshine, space and reset time doesn’t just feel good – it genuinely carries you through the term ahead as you count down to Christmas
In this round-up, we’ve curated the top 10 family hotels for October half-term, thoughtfully organised by age to make choosing that little bit easier. Book now, and trust us – future-you will be very grateful

If you’ve found yourself edging towards all-inclusive ease now babies are in the picture, but still want somewhere that’s going to take your breath away (for all the right reasons), Zafiro Palace Andratx is a very easy yes. Tucked away in the foothills just outside Palma, it walks that fine line between peaceful retreat and practical base, particularly for October half-term, when a quick hop into the city for sightseeing can be a real win if the weather wobbles. And if it does, the indoor pool softens any blow instantly. For those travelling with babies, it’s the room set-up that really shines, with an abundance of private pool suites and oversized balcony baths that turn naptime into something rather lovely for everyone
The dining feels a cut above too, with à la carte restaurants included as part of the all-inclusive offering (it reminded us of Daios Cove), plus thoughtful touches like dedicated puree menus. Despite its size, it never feels busy or crowded, thanks to multiple rooftop pools staggered across different levels, each with sweeping mountain and sea views, and more than enough loungers and generous daybeds that make settling in with a sleeping baby blissfully easy. It’s also wonderfully pram-friendly throughout, with a gentle, unhurried layout, a sweet little stay-and-play style kids club filled with baby toys, and a playground with a sunken trampoline for older siblings. This really is a great way to see Mallorca
Domes Lake Algarve is a brilliant shout for October half-term if you’re after easy, sunshine-filled family travel without the faff of long-haul flights. Just a short hop from the UK, it gives you that instant “we’re on holiday” feeling without the exhaustion that can come from crossing multiple time zones, and the location works perfectly whether you’re planning a long weekend or a full week away. That flexibility is a real win for school families, making it much easier to pick flights that actually fit around life (and budget) rather than the other way around
The Domes name won’t be new to many parents, and there’s a reason for that. It’s undeniably one of Europe’s most reliable hotel brands for affordable family-friendly luxury, consistently nailing the balance between grown-up comfort and genuine child-friendliness. Having stayed at Domes Lake Algarve ourselves last October, it’s a property we have a real soft spot for. For babies and toddlers especially, it ticks a lot of boxes. There’s excellent childcare on offer (from 4 months), a heated pool, and even a sandy-bottom lagoon-style swim spot that definitely deserves all the Insta attention it receives. With the marina an easy wander away (so dinner out doesn’t require a military-level logistical plan) and one of the Algarve’s best beaches just around the corner, this is the kind of setup that makes family holidays feel suspiciously easy, which is exactly what you want when you’re mid–school-term survival mode
If you ask us, if you’re travelling with babies and toddlers, particularly the kind who firmly identify as light sleepers, there is no greater luxury than having completely separate sleep spaces…without needing to remortgage your house to afford them. And that’s exactly where Las Terrazas de Abama Suites comes into its own – because calling the accommodation here “rooms” really doesn’t do it justice. These are fully fledged apartments – think two or three bedrooms, multiple bathrooms, proper kitchens and generous living areas – which means their bedtime doesn’t need to signal the end of your evening. The food offering is equally well thought through. The half board option is a no-brainer, giving you the flexibility to dip in at lunch or dinner (ideal when nap schedules dictate everything), including a restaurant with a menu designed by a Michelin-starred chef. Prefer to keep things low-key? There’s a beautifully curated onsite supermarket, and the team can even pre-stock your fridge before arrival. You can also easily nip down the road to the incredible restaurants at The Ritz-Carlton, Abama
Then there’s the pool scene, which, in short, overdelivers. Heated? Of course. Zero-entry? Tick. A dedicated toddler pool? Naturally. And an infinity pool that makes you gasp? Also yes. And then, the real clincher: the kids’ club. Because let’s be honest – if you’re travelling in October half-term and you’ve sought out this section of the article, there’s a very strong chance you’re juggling both a baby or toddler and a school-aged sprog. Which is exactly where Abama Kids’ Camp comes into its own. This isn’t your standard hotel kids’ club. It’s an entirely outdoor, screen-free setup set within a private garden, with canvas tents dedicated to everything from crafts and science to sensory play and cooking. Beyond that, there’s a trampoline, zip wire, vegetable patch and even a mini theatre stage for full-blown performances. It’s designed for children aged 4-14 (with age groups split to keep things engaging), meaning older siblings are more than entertained – and crucially, happily occupied
If you’re considering switching things up this October half-term, a city break at Martinhal Lisbon Oriente makes a very compelling case for itself, especially if you’re not quite ready to give up on sunshine, but also want something a little more dynamic than a fly-and-flop. Set in Lisbon’s modern Oriente district, this is city-breaking with a family-first twist, and crucially, without the usual overwhelm. Because this is the thing: traditional city breaks with kids can feel like a lot. But here, everything is on your doorstep, and designed with families in mind. You’re right next to the (genuinely brilliant) Oceanário aquarium, a fantastic hands-on science centre, and a cable car that’s basically a sightseeing ride disguised as entertainment
Outside, the whole area is dotted with water features and fountains that kids can run through and splash in, plus wide open green spaces that feel a million miles away from the usual cobbled, crowded city centre chaos. And when you do want to experience “classic Lisbon”, it couldn’t be easier. A quick taxi or metro ride takes you straight into the old town, where you can tick off the essentials – pastel de natas, tram rides, viewpoints – before retreating back to your calm, family-friendly base to decompress next to the heated indoor or outdoor pool. There’s even a complimentary kids club (6 months+) if you fancy an hour at the spa or a cocktail in the bar downstairs. And if you want to turn it into something a little more “best of both worlds”, it pairs perfectly with a few days in Comporta (where we highly recommend Monte do Olival). In October, the beaches here are blissfully quiet, the pace is slow, and – perhaps most importantly – you can actually get a table at the best restaurants without planning your life weeks in advance (try saying that about August)
Let’s cut to it: if you want guaranteed sun in October half-term without the drama, Princesa Yaiza Suite Hotel Resort is a very strong play. Beachfront, brilliantly located and warm in that deeply reassuring, “yes, we made the right decision” kind of way. What sets it apart is how effortlessly it handles the chaos of travelling with kids of different ages. Got a baby or toddler? There’s a chargeable creche from 4 months. You’ll also be sure to appreciate the roomy suites, easy pool setups and general sense that everything has been designed by someone who’s actually met a small child. Got older kids in tow too? Kikoland steps in (the free kids’ club from 3+) and, frankly, it overdelivers. This is not a token kids’ club – it’s a full-blown operation that keeps them busy, engaged, and (whisper it) happily off your hands for a bit. For mini party animals, evenings bring mini discos and sweet shows where enthusiastic audience participation is very much encouraged. What Princesa Yaiza does particularly well is separation. Kikoland is set well apart from the hotel’s two palm-fringed main pools, meaning parents can still cling onto a sense of calm while the kids live their best lives. The same “hidden in plain sight” thinking continues indoors, where a soft play room (complete with supervised sessions – you’re welcome) offers another easy win when you need to switch things up
If you’re looking for an October half term escape that swaps UK drizzle for crisp coastal air and peak New England fall foliage, Wequassett Resort & Golf Club on Cape Cod is about as atmospheric as it gets. Think golden leaves, calm harbour views and that unmistakable “autumn in a movie” feeling, but with the all important comfort when travelling with little ones. Set across a postcard-perfect waterfront estate, the resort feels like a collection of private beach cottages rather than a hotel, with grey-and-white cedar-shake buildings wrapped in hydrangeas and coastal gardens. Inside, accommodation ranges from connecting rooms in the Signature Collection to multi-bedroom Cape Cod Cottages and Round Cove Suites, all styled in soft coastal tones that feel straight out of a magazine, and crucially, give families the space they actually need. For children, the standout is the newly designed Children’s Center (ages 2-12), which goes far beyond a standard kids’ club. There’s also a splash park, family pool, private beach, boating and tennis, plus “dive-in” cinema nights. If you want to live out the all-American dream then this is the place to do it
Turkey in October half-term is that slightly smug travel secret you don’t want to share too loudly, mainly because it still delivers proper sunshine when most of Europe has started packing up. Think mid-20s heat, warm sea swims, and evenings that don’t require knitwear. Hillside Beach Club is the standout way to do it. Hidden in a forested bay near Fethiye, it feels more like a low-key village of calm than a traditional resort, just with significantly better food and childcare
For families, it’s a bit of a dream disguised as a hotel. There’s a dedicated Baby Park for under-threes, supervised Kidside for 4+ complete with waterslides, workshops and enough energy-burning activities to fully exhaust even the most resilient child, and Broadway-level evening entertainment. Parents are free to rediscover what a holiday actually feels like. You can lean into as much or as little as you want – from morning yoga sessions and sunset hikes to mountain biking and a frankly excessive amount of watersports. Or you can do absolutely nothing at all, which is equally valid here. The aptly named Silent Beach (and its equally serene sibling, Serenity Beach) are brilliantly adult-only sanctuaries for overstimulated brains and half-finished conversations
If you are looking for somewhere that genuinely feels like a hidden gem for October half-term, Le Domaine Limoune is one of those places that delivers adult aesthetics, boutique hotel energy and seriously photogenic dining, while still being incredibly family friendly. It does not sound like it should work on paper, but somehow it absolutely does, and the fact that so few people have discovered it yet only adds to the magic. Just 20 minutes from Agadir airport, the journey is as easy as pie, which immediately sets the tone for a low stress start to your holiday. And then you step inside the grounds and it is a proper wow moment. You move through a trio of swimming pools surrounded by palm trees and orange groves that give major adults only Bali vibes, except here they are thoughtfully designed with wide shallow ledges that are perfect for mini merpeople to paddle and play. Carry on wandering and you reach the real jewel in the crown, the on site zoo. But this is not a zoo in the traditional sense. Instead, animal sanctuaries are woven into shaded pathways, so you find yourself strolling between enclosures, ice cream stops and playgrounds as if it is all part of one beautifully designed landscape
At the entrance there is also a free to use Kids’ Club with supervised sessions for children aged 4 plus, alongside a stay and play option for younger children. Accommodation comes in the form of spacious Moroccan style family rooms or, for something truly special, luxury lodges set around the African Reserve, where generous balconies look out over free roaming zebra, ostrich and gazelle. It is the kind of view that makes morning coffee feel like a safari moment. Add to the picture – pony rides, horse shows, parrot holding and staff who are totallly brilliant with children, happily drawing them into games of football, table tennis or spontaneous dance sessions. If there’s one hotel on this list you really *need* to experience, it’s this one
For families looking to trade October grey skies for guaranteed warmth, Thailand is one of the smartest long-haul escapes you can make, and with new direct Virgin Atlantic flights to Phuket launching from the UK at the beginning of the month, it’s suddenly even easier to reach paradise than ever before. On Phuket’s quieter stretch of coast, Banyan Tree Phuket is all private pool villas set around tranquil lagoons and gardens, where everything feels considered, calm and effortlessly high-end. Little ones are well looked after at the Kids’ Club (4+), with crafts, cooking, nature walks and beach play, plus a children’s pool with slides, while babysitting is available for younger guests. The beach is soft, shallow and warm – perfect for little paddlers – and under-4s even eat free at lunch and dinner, which is always a bonus. While children are happily entertained, parents can properly switch off, from spa time to sunset dining in the treetops at Bird’s Nest, followed by one of the most memorable breakfasts you’ll find anywhere. Thailand at it’s best
If you’re eyeing a warm, easy-going escape for October half-term that actually works for families with older kids, Agapi Beach Resort in Crete is one that deserves a spot on your shortlist. Set just outside Heraklion along a wide stretch of sandy shoreline, it’s the kind of place that balances laid-back Greek charm with just enough structure to keep the 8+ entertained without feeling overly “little kid” focused
The layout is a big part of the appeal. Low-rise bungalows are scattered through palm-filled gardens, giving it a more relaxed, village-style feel than your typical blocky resort. Rooms are simple but comfortable, and the whole place feels easy to navigate, ideal when you’ve got independent-minded tweens who want a bit of freedom (within reason). But where Agapi really comes into its own for this age group is the activity offering. You’ve got a solid mix of sports and experiences that go beyond the basics: tennis courts, beach volleyball, bike hire and a great watersports setup right on the beach. There’s also a well-run kids’ club that skews slightly older during half-term, plus things like Greek cooking sessions and cultural workshops that feel a bit more engaging than your standard resort fare. Pools and beach days are, of course, a given – with three pools to choose from and a long, sandy stretch that’s perfect for that still-warm October sea. And because it’s Crete, you’ve got the bonus of easy access to days out if your crew gets restless: Heraklion’s historical sites and waterparks are a short drive away
