The best under the radar family-friendly hotels in Mallorca

With more than 250 stunning beaches and postcard-worthy views, Mallorca is one of Europe’s most beautiful islands – and it’s just a two hour hop from the UK. While you’ll find lots of fabulously family friendly hotels and resorts on the island, which you’ll find in our Best Hotels in Mallorca for Families roundup, there’s another side as well. One that feels quieter, simpler and a little more under the radar, whilst still warmly welcoming tiny travellers. Think laid-back rural hideaways, small stays tucked into sleepy villages and easy self-catering spots by the sea. If you’re looking for somewhere low-key, characterful or a little kinder on the wallet, these are some of the Mallorca stays worth knowing about

Is Mallorca a good destination for families?

Mallorca is a dream family holiday destination that somehow manages to tick every box at once. With short, easy flight times from across Europe, it’s ideal for travelling with little ones – no epic inflight meltdowns required. The island is home to some of Europe’s best beaches – think soft white sand, shallow turquoise waters, and calm coves that are perfect for paddling, snorkelling and stress-free swimming. Families are brilliantly catered for, with a huge choice of family-friendly resorts, relaxed hotels, and spacious villas, many offering kids’ clubs, splash parks and activities that keep everyone happy. Beyond the beach, there are charming old towns to explore, scenic train rides, gentle hiking, boat trips, water parks and fantastic local food that even fussy eaters tend to love

How am I best to book my holiday?

We’ve designed Tiny Travelship to make booking your family holiday as simple, transparent, and stress-free as possible. If a hotel is an official Tiny Travelship partner, you’ll be directed to their dedicated listing page in our digital directory, where you’ll find detailed information on everything from flight & transfer times to room layouts, and monthly temperature guides. On these pages, we also provide honest advice on the best way to book. This might be via Tiny Travel Agency, in the instance they price match what you would pay by going direct (whilst seamlessly planning your escape end to end, for free, and even unlocking extra perks!). Or, you might get the best rates by booking with the hotel themselves (though sometimes Tiny Travel Agency can still step in and help, if you’re eager to forgo any holiday headaches)

If a hotel isn’t an official partner, we’ll either link you through to booking.com to complete your booking – meaning we make a small commission – or flag that we’d recommend booking via Tiny Travel Agency (again, so you can access great rates & added benefits, whilst receiving complimentary support and insider intel). Either way, rest assured, every hotel we feature has been tried, tested, and genuinely loved by fellow well-travelled parents

Best for price, location and brilliant local restaurants

Blau Colonia Sant Jordi

Looking for a cheap-yet-chic Balearic bolthole that doesn’t compromise on location? Blau Colònia Sant Jordi quietly delivers. Tucked into the unspoilt southeast of Mallorca, it’s walking distance from Colònia Sant Jordi – one of the island’s most underrated foodie towns – where long lunches at Cassai Beach House roll seamlessly into beach afternoons, and where nearby Ses Salines serves up serious flavour credentials. Even the ever-charming Santanyí is close enough for an easy outing. All that, and just 40 minutes from the airport. Back at base, the resort feels refreshingly low-key. Low-rise buildings sit amongst mature trees, ponds and swathes of green, giving it a relaxed, villagey feel rather than a concrete-heavy complex. Pools – both indoor and outdoor – are heated in the cooler months, which makes all the difference for families travelling outside peak summer. There’s also a pirate-ship splash pool set slightly away from the main hub and conveniently next to a brilliant playground. Add in brand-new padel courts, gorgeous nearby beaches (Es Trenc is within easy reach), and dining that’s solid on site but exceptional once you step into town, and it strikes that sweet spot between value and style. For families who want beautiful surroundings, genuinely good food within strolling distance, and facilities that feel considered rather than chaotic, this corner of Mallorca makes a very persuasive case

Best for good old fashioned hospitality

Hotel BonSol Resort & Spa

A family owned gem around for over 70 years, BonSol Hotel Resort & Spa is a stalwart on the child friendly Mallorca scene – perhaps because of its charming quirkiness, which appeals to little ones and their grown ups alike. From antique suits of armour proudly guarding stairways, to eccentric artefacts adorning walls and a labyrinth of tunnels, the lounge areas and grand dining rooms have more than a little ‘medieval castle’ about them. But don’t worry, things get a lot lighter and brighter when you get to the bedrooms. As well as almost 100 options in the main building (including lots of suites with separate sleeping spaces) there are 50 beach villas – and all are parent pleasingly large, unlike some more modern resorts which can veer into ‘boxy’. The family delights continue in the form of saltwater swimming pools, a quiet cove, laid back activity club during summer months (2+), playground, tennis courts, boules and indoor toy room (phew!). The complete antithesis of pristine but personality-less five star resorts, BonSol is all about the personal touch – it’s why families say they head back year after year. The crowning jewel of the hotel? The gorgeous gardens, decades in the making (and don’t they look lush!)

Best self catering for bigger broods

Portomar Apartments

Once more for the people at the back – apartments with hotel facilities are *revolutionary* for family holidays, giving you space to sprawl but also little touches of luxury (like someone else making breakfast!).. At Portomar Apartments you’ll find three onsite restaurants & bars, though we’re reliably informed staff can provide lots of local recommendations too (and are always keen to engage with little ones). You can expect a play house full of toys in the corner of the breakfast area (genius!), as well as plenty of highchairs & tiny traveller menus. Apartments with up to four bedrooms are available, making these pads perfect for bigger broods – and if you’re travelling with a bouncing bubba, obviously cots can be supplied as well. Whilst the pool is unheated (like many on the island), the shallow circular section besides the main swimming spot is great for splashing around. It heats up quickly in the sun, and loungers and shades are a-plenty. What else do we love? Quite a lot, actually. Parking on the street outside is free and there’s usually lots of space, and a wide, sandy beach is less than a 5 minute stroll away. There’s also a playground in walking distance, and the decor? Well, the pics speak for themselves

Best apartments with hotel facilities

Hotel Illa d’Or apartments

While Hotel Illa d’Or itself is something of a historic hotspot, dating back to 1929 with a very star-strewn past, it’s the more recent addition of the Illa d’Or apartments (just over the road) that will pique the interest of parents. Surrounded by beautiful gardens, tennis courts, and a large sparkling pool, families have the choice of a self-catering stay or can make full use of the hotel’s four star facilities – including its three restaurants (plus spa, zen-like lounges and piano bar). While the apartments have one bedroom (with an additional sofabed in a separate lounge area), cots are available free of charge plus children’s menus can be found in the eateries. Though honestly, it’s the safe, sandy beach right on the doorstep that keeps families coming back year after year (almost everyone we’ve heard from is a loyal, returning guest!). Want to push the boat out (literally) while you’re away? The hotel has its own private jetty, where you can set sail from sunrise to sunset. If that’s not the stuff holiday memories are made of, we don’t know what is

Best laid back, rural retreat

Agroturismo Sa Rota d’ en Palerm by MHR

If you’re looking for somewhere to check-in and immediately check-out of your day-to-day, Mallorca’s Sa Rota d’en Palerm provides the perfect rural respite. Nestled in the heart of the island, far removed from the fanfare of families who flock to the coast, this taste of tranquillity enables parents to truly slow down and switch off. The focus here isn’t on endless entertainment (though the toy room is a cute touch), but enjoying some quiet, quality time together. Relaxed, rustic rooms surround a glittering pool with a gorgeous shaded area, and floats & toys can be provided to tiny traveller’s delight. Hammocks encourage a spot of daytime snoozing, should you manage to tire little legs roaming the sprawling estate grounds. And if the pull of exploring proves irresistible, some of the country’s best beaches and quaintest towns are an easy drive away. Spacious apartments, in renovated 18th century buildings, come equipped with kitchenettes for low maintenance morning bites and light lunches. And come evening, the team will happily provide their favourite family restaurant recommendations (the region is renowned for serving up some of the island’s finest food)

Best for a stylish self catering stay

Just Experience Mallorca

More of a homestay-er than a hotel enthusiast? We aren’t exaggerating when we say we’ve hit the self catering jackpot with Just Experience Mallorca, a collection of 6 spacious, stylish & well equipped self catering apartments right on the beach in Sant Elm. With all the essentials you need for a break with baby (most crucially perhaps, your own washer dryer!), somehow practicality in no way detracts from the design led decor, and the wide stretching sea views speak for themselves. And we weren’t joking when we said that they are ‘right on the beach’ – if they were any closer, they’d actually be in the water. Bigger kids will love the paddle boards available to borrow, but there is a mini pool on the roof too if you’d prefer, as well as a communal BBQ and bikes to borrow

The glorious village of Sant Elm punches way above its weight when it comes to foodie offerings – it is filled with amazing local eateries, our favourites being Cala Conills and La Casita Del Mer. There’s also a lovely local playground for tiny travellers, hiking trails in easy reach and the well-loved little town of Soller (with its charming, infamous vintage wooden railway) is a short drive away

Best under the radar (seriously sustainable) escape

Hotel Ca’n Bonico

An environmentally aware boutique bolthole supporting zero kilometre produce and renewable energy, Hotel Ca’n Bonico blends tradition with modernity to deliver uncompromised charm and comfort. Pairing beamed ceilings with stone walls and minimalist interiors, the Mallorcan manor house is full of peaceful corners and light, bright spaces, but the star of the show is undoubtedly the spectacular pool set in the middle of safe and secure gardens, overlooked by a historic church bell tower (and don’t get us started on the poolside bar, serving delicious local, seasonal dishes)

The vibe here is lowkey and laid back, with lots of lounge areas showcasing the works of local artists, plus everywhere feels pleasantly spacious – a world away from hectic, bustling resorts. When it comes to tiny travellers, they are warmly welcomed – cots are provided and rooms with balconies are ideal for post bedtime drinks but this isn’t an all singing & dancing Kids Club kind of getaway. Instead, entertainment comes in the form of the stunning nearby beaches – some of the most coveted in South Mallorca – which are only a few minutes away

Best for families seeking an authentic experience

Son Siurana

A farm stay finca in the north of the island, Son Siurana is an ecological estate and real treat for the senses, with sprawling apricot, pear & plum trees sprinkled across expansive gardens and rolling orchards, great for letting little legs run wild. When it comes to where to stay, choose from an elegant suite or self catering apartment in the main building, or instead opt for a lovingly restored cottage if space is top priority. The decor, we would describe as rustic and artfully eclectic – a real taste of authentic Mallorca, a theme continued in the gorgeous restaurant. Here, luxurious adults-only evenings can be on the cards – magically, it is within baby monitor stretch of certain rooms (so do check in advance if you’re planning a holiday date night). Masseuses can also be arranged, and there are bikes to borrow too – this is a rural retreat at its finest, and the perfect place to slow the pace

The pool at Son Siurana has a lovely shallow end which is great for splashing, and there’s plenty of family friendly beaches on your doorstep as well – Alucdia and Pollenca are both well worth a visit, with shallow warm waters and lots of restaurants to choose from. In summary? A top pick if you want to really soak up the traditional charms of the island

Best for a budget beach break

Hotel Playa Mondrago

If you’ve spent time googling ‘the best beaches in Europe’ chances are you’re familiar with Mallorca’s powder-white sands and evian-clear waters. The internet is right – they’re nothing short of breathtaking. Well, we’re here to tell you that the best of the bunch are clustered together on the south-east of the island, and if you book a stay at Hotel Playa Mondrago you can stroll from bed to can’t-believe-your-eyes beaches in 2 minutes flat. Nestled in the heart of Natural Park, this family run hotel is a steal of a find. The spacious rooms are basic in design, but clean, comfortable and complemented with ocean-gazing balconies. There’s a small outdoor pool flanked by loungers and a separate splashing spot for tots. Hungry? While the onsite bar and restaurant does have mixed reviews, there’s also a neighbouring toes-in-the-sand restaurant and impressively kitted out mini market too – selling all your usual holiday snacks, from ham, and cheeses to fresh fruit and baby food
