Le Mas des Oules, Provence

Just outside of Uzès, one of Provence’s most beautiful (but still relatively undiscovered) villages, sits Le Mas des Oules. Here you’ll find a charming collection of cappuccino-hued self catering cottages. This is no identikit hotel room job. Each interior is uniquely decorated, from farmhouse fixtures & artfully placed antiques, to contemporary cushions & industrial accents. All come kitted out with fully equipped kitchens and private shaded terraces – music to parents ears. The glistening outdoor pool beckons parents to relax (rosé in hand), whilst tiny travellers roam free. The turreted 19th century fairytale castle offers cosseting & charming hotel rooms, whilst spacious self-catering suites, apartments and villas are scattered throughout the sublimely scented grounds. Combining the sought-after blend of privacy and seamless hotel services, you can indulge in a variety of exquisite offerings at this remarkable destination. Immerse yourself in wine tastings, pamper yourself with in-room spa treatments, rejuvenate with invigorating yoga classes, and savor delectable cuisine at the on-site restaurant. Le Phare, Il de Re

Marrying camping camaraderie with resort resources, Le Phare is an ‘open air hotel’ on Ile de Ré’s wildest, and quietest, coast. Within ambling distance of the Atlanatic, and located on a pint-sized island peppered with pine forests, this is definitely a back-to-nature retreat, but not one that scrimps on creature comforts. You’ll get the fresh air fun and relaxed vibes of glamping life, but with the added allure of proper beds, hot showers, aircon and TVs. Not stopping there, guests also have access to in & outdoor pools, an onsite restaurant, 2 playgrounds and a free Kids Club (during July & August). Live out your small town French fantasies, spending days cycling from charming village to charming village, swimming in secret seaside spots and sampling the multitude of oyster shacks that line the paths of this largely car-free island idyll

Chateau Castigno Wine Village, Assignan

We all know it takes a village to raise a child, and if we had a choice the village we’d be calling upon is Château Castigno. Fine dining foodie fare, wine tasting and magical massages may not be concepts you usually associate with family holidays, but this off the beaten track pink paradise provides all the pampering support we need to parent our best. Offering a completely unique take on resort living, Chateau Castigno hotel is spread over the tiny hilltop hamlet of Assignan. Enchanting bedrooms are dotted throughout the town, with a trio of restaurants circling the village square. A short walk, cycle, or vespa away, are the hotel’s vineyards, with an architecturally triumphant wine cave offering generous tastings. Decor in the rooms is inspired by the red and pinky hues of the local wines. Expect wooden beams, velvet drapes, Asian antiques and sumptuous beds. Those in Maison d’Amis have access to private patios and are mere steps away from the communal pool. Larger families will love Villa Rouge, which comes complete with a kitchen, garden and private watering hole. A true epicurean fantasyland, for lovers of food a visit here should be deemed an essential. There’s three restaurants to choose from – La Petite Table (a French bistro), Le Thai (fusion Asian) and La Table (the Michelin star offering) – and every single one will blow you and your taste buds away. Whilst you won’t find a Kids Club or any overtly family friendly facilities here, the ease of having everything within walking distance (with no need for car seat tantrums), for many is the ultimate opulence

Chateau Villarlong, Carcassonne

Escape to your very own chateau at this under the radar French fancy, where apartments of all shapes and sizes enjoy a gorgeous on site restaurant and sprawling grounds perfect for playing the day away. The kind of holiday where you completely lose track of time, Chateau Villarlong invites you to sit back and relax in suntrap corners, wine in hand, while your tiny travellers delightedly run wild before reconvening for family fun. Whether conquering the maze, playing countless games of boules, or cooling off with a splash in the sparkling infinity pool, this is laid back living at it’s finest. The dreamy combo high on most parent’s holiday wishlists, all of the apartments are set up for self catering (with plenty of baby bits, too) but the gorgeous wine vault restaurant is on hand when a treat is in order. Arguably one of the prettiest regions in France, there are dozens of beautiful walks right from your doorstep – through the surrounding vineyards and flower strewn meadows while further afield, there are plenty of authentic, mediaeval villages to explore (think restaurant-lined canals and fairytale castles!)

Le Barn, Il-de-France

Do as the French do and escape the city for a chic countryside retreat. 45 minutes outside of Paris sits Le Barn, a home-from-home cum boutique family hotel with serious Soho House vibes. Nestled on a landscape of fields and farms, rooms overlook picturesque pastures and a small boating lake. Curtains made from Barbour coats, antique maps, shaker style touches and perfectly mismatched vintage prints adorn the rooms. Fresh, locally sourced cuisine is served in the sun-dappled conservatory. Here no one blinks an eye at rambunctious toddlers. Guests are free to do as much or as little as they like; ride horses through the woodlands, cycle around the fields, pamper in the spa, or simply sit back and relax in the idyllic surroundings

Chateaux dans les Arbes, Dordogne

For a truly magical, memory making stay, Châteaux dans les Arbres is hard to beat. Translated as ‘Castle in the Trees’, a cluster of cabins designed to look like Dordogne chateaux are found hidden amongst the treetops, or peacefully floating on the lake. These treehouses are far removed from the back garden basics associated with the name. Think turrets, hot tubs, claw foot baths and private saunas. Pandering to our parental penchant for ease, meal services and massages are available on request. There’s a heated outdoor pool open during the summer, woodwalks on your doorstep and boules and bicycles to keep tiny travellers entertained

Abbaye Des Vaux De Cernay, Cernay-la-Ville

Proving that romance post-kids isn’t dead, Abbaye Des Vaux De Cernay is a hotel guaranteed to leave you weak at the knees. An ancient abbey turned Grand (with a capital G!) getaway, think Hogwarts-esque interiors and wonderful woodland surrounds – deep enough to make The Gruffalo proud. An impossibly chic countryside crashpad (as you’d expect from the Artistic Director of Dior Maison), guests are treated to vast halls, vaulted ceilings and plenty of comfy corners to ignite imaginary games. The sprawling grounds are brimming with activities, from sailing, swimming and horse riding, to snoozing in the cinema room or getting your gaming on. The three onsite restaurants act as an epicurean enclave, whilst the spa treatments leave parents worshipping at the altar of their therapist. There’s also a gorgeous Kids Club in collaboration with Tartine et Chocolat for les enfants aged 3 +. All this less than 45 minutes outside of Paris? That’s our kind of easy escapism

If Rapunzel were confined in one of Domaine des Etangs’ turreted towers we’re not sure she’d be letting her hair down. A fairytale castle of Disney proportion, we’d rather NOT be rescued from this family-friendly French fiefdom. A spoiling countryside retreat, expect a picture-perfect playground, zip wire, tennis court, smattering of lakes, and ancient attic brimming with board games and fancy dress. Kids well and truly taken care of, what about us parents you ask? The 7 rooms are gorgeously appointed; farm-to-fork fare downright delicious; and the sublime spa guaranteed to relieve any aches and parental pains

Capelongue, a Beaumier Hotel & Spa, Provence

A bastion of beauty, Capelongue estate is chock a block with charm and the picture-perfect place to live out your French provencal fantasies. Recently renovated by the Beaumier group, the hotel has preserved its heritage, while upping the ante on amenities – from the revamped spa and wood-fired restaurant to the duo of pretty swimming pools. The meandering streets of Bonnieux are a short stroll (10 minutes) away and is regarded by many as one of the most authentic villages in the South of France. A self proclaimed ‘family-friendly mini-resort’, Imagine Roussillon may be small in size but it’s mighty in distractions for discerning tots. Family-forward, yes, but at a go-slow speed. There are just 5 apartments and a villa, sleeping between 4-8 guests, all kitted out with kitchens and breathtaking views. Days can be spent yoyo-ing between the trampolines, sandpit, zip wire, games barn, two heated pools and the no-reservation needed Kids Club (4+). An undeniable winner of the postcode lottery, they’ll be no transfer-tantrums on Imagine Roussillon’s watch. The airport is only 20 minutes away, and you can reach one of the Med’s beautiful beaches and only need to spend 5 minutes in the car. Breakfast is served daily and during the school holidays thrice weekly dinners are included in the rates

Country Lodge, Normandy

Country Lodge transports families into the pages of a storybook. Proudly WIFI free, groups are encouraged to disconnect from their day to day and reconnect with each other at this back to nature retreat. Nestled in Normandy’s Le Perche Nature Park, Country Lodge’s grounds are pretty magical, with a smattering of cabins & lodges surrounding an outdoor pool, tennis courts and communal ‘lounge’, where drinks are served next to an open fireplace. Morning duties for tiny travellers include chicken feeding and rabbit cuddling, while afternoons should be spent on the see-it-to-believe-it giant treetop ball pit at nearby FilO’Parc.
