June is a family travel sweet spot for Brits. The Mediterranean typically hasn’t warmed up to too soaring temperatures yet for tots (including a few shoulder season destinations) and you can generally bet on forgoing that long haul flight with tinies in pursuit of some sunshine. What’s more, you’ll be merrily skipping inflated school holiday rates and flights, and generally laughing your way to an uncrowded kids club and rows of empty sunloungers. The temperatures allow for long, beachy mornings, much-needed siestas (for the whole clan) and eating al lenafresco – an activity that sun-deprived, British parents will never tire of. But where to go? Here’s our guide to where to go in June on a family holiday, with hotel recommendations for each destination

Cliff-clinging monasteries and coves filled with surreal, cobalt water, picturesque, sugar cube villages that wiggle up to churches emitting incense and hair-raising Byzantine chants, tavernas that spill onto blonde beaches, their railings drying off octopus and various catches of the day – Greece is a sun-bleached wonder for all tribes of traveller. For families, it’s easy-going, outdoorsy and as far as one can possibly get to the Caribbean without the gruelling long haul mit kinder. It’s also a superb destination for parents unwilling to fully shed the cultural skins of their previous (BC) life. Mainland Greece and its islands are steeped in mythology, layered in history, and host some of the most exhilarating, fascinating day trips families could ask for – which are often still feasible in the June heat. Pack a tot-friendly mythology book, swot up on your chosen island’s history – it’s a rewarding way to offset the hours refereeing sandcastle building and mopping moussaka off tiny mouths. Culture aside, you’ll find some of Europe’s most family-friendly hotels here, (including arguably the gold standard), where private, sugar-cube villas are cleverly designed with families in mind and Kids Clubs are light-filled, fresh and plugged-in, allowing parents time to reconnect on coastal bike rides, spa trips or with the simple, delightful pleasure of an undisturbed lunch in the sunshine

Ok, it can be hot in June. It’s rolling the dice a little, but the guaranteed sunshine may be precisely what vitamin d-deprived parents need while their children splash about in a shaded pool. Look at Cyprus on a map, and you’ll figure out why it’s a shoulder season favourite – it’s closer to the Middle East then Europe and its dappled, sun-scorched landscape will really bring this fact home as you come into land. While there are untamed national parks to explore, layers of history to inspect, the Troodos mountains to scale, Cyprus excels at the fly-and-flop game and plays host to a few of Europe’s leading kids clubs, ensuring parents can also participate. These are the sort of bells-and-whistles enterprises that put smart London nurseries to shame, with fantastical playzones, shaded waterparks and age-specific activities and food. It’s worth considering a villa-style suite with a balcony or terrace for in-room dining in these hotels, as otherwise you’ll be forking out for a babysitter or enjoying your supper together at 6pm

Generally, the Italians adore children. Which is a great start, before you’ve begun to draw up a list of the country’s family-friendly hotels. Few eyebrows are raised if a pram rolls into a trattoria, or even Michelin starred restaurants (except, perhaps, in Milan). High chairs are whipped out, complements exchanged and children admired like a Botticelli painting. What’s more, Italy’s dramatic topography and varied landscape can conjure up thousands of different styles of holiday, and for June, if families aren’t bee-lining for the gelato and warm shallows of the sun-baked coastline, they’ll be side-stepping the traditional hot holiday format for the Dolomites. These majestic, pink-sunset mountains are dotted with family-oriented hotels (envisage organic farms collaborating with kids clubs, parents cycling along tracks with tots-in-tow, and family dips in glassy lakes). Parents are drawn to the cooler climes and the outdoorsy rhythms, but, substantially, to the fantastic, trailblazing kids clubs for some well-deserved time in the thermal spas

Families planning a Portuguese escape in June tend to hot foot it to the Algarve, where the coast is sun-drenched (not scorched), the sea glistens as it would in peak summer, and no one’s stuffed into family-friendly resorts like the nation’s famous sardines. Portugal enjoys some of Europe’s most wild, unsullied coastline, rituals as delicious as its custard pasteis de nata pastries, and ancient olive groves that wrap white-washed quintas, framed in weathered burgandies or cobalt blue. It’s charming and refreshingly affordable compared to the South of France or the Italian coast, from the high-end family-friendly hotels to the lunches in town and nicknacks you pick up in artisanal village shops. And there’s various grades of family-friendly to lean into – lightly at Sao Lourenco do Barrocol whose lack of a kids club is made up for in its bucolic Alentejo setting and idyllic activities (riding through wildflower meadows, learning to cook traditional Portuguese dishes outside) then at the other end of the scale, Algarve hotels geared towards young families such as Four Seasons Fairways, Quinta do Lago

We’ll look at its islands separately (scroll down). For now, let’s focus on Spain’s sunniest stretch of coastline, Costa del Sol, a superb June destination that quite possibly didn’t feature on couples’ radars, until they had children. Yes, it’s a little flashy (LA-wannabe in places), with a profusion of concrete that still leaves so many asking ‘why?.’ But what you have to remember is that the fake tan and pricey drinks arrived here for good reason – because the sea is warm (even in June), the skies, impossibly blue, and the hotels choreographed around frazzled parents, in desperate need of a child-free, poolside afternoon. The luxury all-inclusive model has really gripped this stretch of coastline (tot accoutrements all accounted for), unless you wish to swing your vintage car into the Marbella Club (an old school hotel and something of an institution, where well-mannered children can bomb in private villa pools and finesse their Spanish cooking and swimming skills in the aesthetically-pleasing, perfectly-shaded kids club). For something more free range, inland Spain is dotted with idyllic fincas and haciendas, where children paint under verandas, feed chickens and snooze in hammocks after a pony ride through the olive groves

June holiday planning often revolves around the Mediterranean. But those choosing to forgo the clogged up coast for Heidi country – warm, Alpine lakes, crisp mountain air and green valleys dotted with pretty towns – will be adding to a growing trend of alternative summer destinations for families. It’s particularly appealing to London families, who long for open spaces and to purge little lungs of soot with that fresh, Alpine air. In June, the Austrian Alps are balmy and beautiful, Vienna is in full bloom, while its music and museums are a cultural trove for both parents and sprogs, and the country is generally ripe for battery-hen British families to descend. The hotels in the Austrian Alps are a different grade of family-friendly to the rest of Europe – even the swishy ones aren’t afraid to stick in a subterranean play-den or an outdoor park beside the bar area. They’re genuinely family-friendly, without paying lip-service to the notion with a chic coat on, and are notoriously hard to turn back from having sampled a week here in summer. In June, the meadows are ablaze with wild flowers and days are filled with sunshine, though you could easily bring the tribe here in July and August too. And while it draws in the outdoorsy brigade, the spas are in their own league and best enjoyed with children firmly checked into the kids club, petting goats or learning to swim

One for the bare-footed bohemes. Ibiza’s easy-going energy, its nourishing food and gin-clear shallows make it a haven for little ones and their sleep-deprived parents. Away from the party scene (in the south), the island is scattered with reimagined finca homestays and agriturismos – the work of those after a slower-pace of life, whose epiphanies seem to have stretched their tolerance for little people. Its hippy character lends itself to easy breastfeeding anywhere, anyhow, tantrums along the beach, and generally the flamboyant chaos that children bring to everyday life. And in June, the island is juicy-peach-ripe for family travel, with warm days and minimal bunfights for sun loungers. Smalls can weave through citrus groves before breakfast, scoff ice-cream along glassy pools and scuttle in from the beach at dusk, a tangled mop of salty hair and sandy toes, straight onto restaurant chairs for al fresco suppers. Those who like to dip into Ibiza’s bohemian soul with more babywipes and babysitters can book into one of its stylish resorts, such as Six Senses and Petunia. It’s also a pocket-sized isle, meaning beaches, historic castles and that family-friendly pizzeria you read about are usually half an hour or so away

As the birthplace of the cheap, all-inclusive family holiday, Mallorca has undergone something of a radical rebrand in recent years. Its artisanal, go-slow spirit endured throughout this unsavoury, high rise chapter, though it’s only really come to the fore with a series of eye-catching finca and townhouse hotels, whose razor-sharp design and exquisite farm-to-fork food have lured over a new tribe of traveller. This shift hasn’t overlooked families though, it’s taken them along for the earthy, hand-crafted ride with tots feasting along finca terraces, napping in citrus orchards and helping collect chicken eggs first thing. Beyond hotel boundaries there’s the island’s natural beauty – its sun-dappled coves, pine-shaded beaches and hilly interior, all ripe for exploration in June, all relatively affordable for families (their most memorable days will be beach picnics and petting a donkey)

France rarely tops the charts for family-friendly escapes – anyone who’s braved a weekend in Paris with young children will be familiar with its woeful lack of baby changing, perilous stairs down to restaurant loos and a shocking absence of lifts (and helping hands) when lugging prams down to the Metro. But Paris is not France, and France is not Paris. Venture beyond the city walls and you’ll find châteaux with acres of bucolic landscape for children to tear through, outdoorsy, village-like hotels where families pootle about on bikes and play petanque in the sunshine, and vast, health-club style resorts with right-on kids clubs. The South of France is fully charged by June, just without swarms of term-time families, while inland and further north, the cooler temperatures lure in tots eager to saisir le jour (aka run around pools and chateaux gardens in soggy swimwear) and not be confined to an airconditioned kids club

We’ve waxed lyrical here about the Mediterranean’s knack for turning up the heat right when you’d love to all be outside, without sunstroke. You’re generally safe in June (it’s a little dicey the further towards Africa or the Middle East your chosen islands’ drift), though if overdosing on sun is a worry (or if you fancy shaking up the traditional holiday format) why not try a Scandinavian summer. Pack your blackout blinds for the midnight sun, and potentially, your mosquito repellent, but Sweden in summer is a relatively undiscovered delight. Families can pootle around on boats to explore tiny isles dotted with cabins, jump into fresh water from little jetties, convene with rugs and marshmallows over fires on the beach. There’s plenty of hygge to be had in the chillier evenings, and family is baked into the Swedish psyche, making their family hotels bucolic oases where children can be themselves and parents exhale. To really turn summering on its head, why not head north to Lapland, whose snow has melted to reveal dense forests and some of Europe’s coolest, angular hotels
